Port Adelaide 2021

Talk on the national game

Port Adelaide 2021

Postby Booney » Mon Nov 02, 2020 3:24 pm

Port Adelaide have welcomed appointed Matthew Richardson as the new CEO replacing Keith Thomas.

As confirmed by Chairman David Koch at last night’s prestigious John Cahill Medal, the Port Adelaide Football Club is thrilled to appoint Matthew Richardson as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Mr Richardson will replace outgoing CEO Keith Thomas who finishes up today after more than nine years at the helm.

Mr Koch said Mr Richardson was the stand out choice from an outstanding field of candidates assembled through a national search, working with independent senior executive recruiting company BKD Executive Leaders.

“This is arguably the most important appointment of any club. It’s one never to be taken likely. It is a huge responsibility,” Mr Koch said.

“It became very clear throughout the process that Matthew was the most compelling candidate.

“No candidate we spoke to ever seemed to have the all-round package that Matthew brings. I was always sub-consciously benchmarking other candidates against him and Matthew always presented the attributes we were looking for.

“Matthew is an exceptionally talented administrator who is held in the highest regard within the Port Adelaide community and across the AFL industry as a whole.

“Matthew is primed to take our great club forward. He understands our story and our people like no other. He is already closely connected with our members and corporate partners and has an extensive network of contacts.

“As a Board we didn’t ever want to be accused of making the easy decision so we got Andrew Demetriou’s sports executive recruitment firm to scour the market and put Matthew through the wringer.

“The end result was Andrew concluded we had the best person right here already.”

Mr Richardson has been at the club since 2001 starting as Marketing Manager of the Magpies in the SANFL and then progressing to CEO from 2004 to 2009.

In 2009, Mr Richardson joined the Power as General Manager of Marketing and Consumer Business and was promoted in 2017 to Executive General Manager.

In 2010 Mr Richardson headed up the club’s strategic campaign to unite Port Adelaide as One Club, bring the Magpies in the SANFL and Power in the AFL together.

This led to the official reunification of the Port Adelaide Football Club which was a catalyst to the club’s record 60,000 plus members in 2015.

Mr Richardson said it is a great privilege and honour to be appointed as CEO of Port Adelaide.

“We have amazing people at every level of this club and I’m so grateful for the opportunity,” Mr Richardson said.

“I thank David and the Board for entrusting me with the responsibility of leading this club forward into a new era of success.

“Without a doubt, I feel a great responsibility to all our stakeholders – the people who have come before us and importantly the current custodians. Our job is to make you proud and make the Port Adelaide Football Club great.

“At Port Adelaide, you have to embrace the expectations that are ingrained in our club. It is a very special place and I think it is a really exciting time to be a Port Adelaide supporter, so to be the CEO right now, I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity. You can’t help but feel the history of success here at this club built over 150 years. This club is about winning and we will not shy away from that expectation and responsibility.

“Our future success will be built on a foundation of care and connection. It’s something we’ve heard Kenny talk a lot about this year. The great clubs have it and it is essential to be successful in this competition. And that’s at every level across our club, inside and outside.

“Our 150th anniversary and the challenges of COVID has reinforced that our people are most important to us. A united Port Adelaide family is a powerful force, and I can’t wait to harness that in pursuit of our mission.

“Football teams don’t win premierships, football clubs wins premierships. I’m looking forward to leading this club forward in the next era of greatness.”

The Port Adelaide Football Club is delighted to welcome leading international sportswear brand Macron as its new technical apparel partner for the next four years. The long-term partnership signals Macron’s entry into Australia’s biggest sports market and is an important step in Macron’s global growth strategy.

Port Adelaide Executive General Manager, Matthew Richardson was thrilled to welcome Macron as a Platinum Partner for 2021.

“We’re delighted to welcome such an iconic international brand to the Port Adelaide family,” he said.

“When we first met with Macron mid last year, we were immediately impressed with their story and approach to the sportwear business.”

“Over the course of the past 50 years, Macron has built a reputation for producing high quality and technically innovative sportswear and athleisure apparel.

“We know Macron has built its success around its values of hard work and constant improvement - something the Port Adelaide Football Club admires greatly, and certainly values we also share.

“In a short period of time, Macron has gone from having a customer base which was almost entirely in Italy to being a globally recognised brand, and Port Adelaide is pleased to be part of its first step into the AFL.”

Port Adelaide visited Macron’s impressive new headquarters in Bologna, Italy, in late 2019 to help with the design of the new club apparel.

Macron has been working closely with the club and players throughout 2020 to develop its first AFL guernsey and the official on-field range for 2021.

Macron Chief Executive Officer Gianluca Pavanello said the company was delighted to partner with Port Adelaide, a club which shared a similar philosophy.

“This will be the first time the Macron Hero logo will be seen in the AFL and we are delighted with joining Port Adelaide. Port Adelaide is a club with a history of success, with bold ambition to expand and grow but always remaining connected to where it comes from, something that resonated strongly with Macron and that was clearly evident from the first moment we met with the team at Port Adelaide,” Mr Pavanello said.

The new Port Adelaide guernsey will use the exclusive Armevo fabric, designed to be durable, lightweight and body fitting as well as suitable for all weather conditions. Some of the leading Rugby nations in the world are partnered by Macron and the new AFL match guernseys will use a combination of their unique materials and design features.

The new range will also feature Port Adelaide’s 150th anniversary logo, initially introduced this year as part of the club’s celebrations . Mr Richardson said the feedback from all key stakeholders including members, corporate partners and players was to retain the new logo for 2021 and beyond.

“The feedback from all of our stakeholders has been overwhelmingly in support of us moving forward with this unified brand. One of the features of our 150th celebrations was to bring our club together in every way, and this logo is another powerful symbol of what a unified Port Adelaide can achieve.”

The Port Adelaide Macron range is expected to arrive in Australia in January.

About Macron
Macron is a leading European company in the production and sale of active sportswear, operating in four main business areas: Teamwear, sportswear and accessories for team sports (football, rugby, basketball, volleyball, baseball, handball, futsal, running); Merchandising, official kits, free time products and accessories for the supporters of the club sponsored by Macron; Run & Train, technical apparel for individual runners and for fitness; Athleisure, sports inspired apparel for leisure time, for those who wish to wear Macron outside pure sporting activities. Macron owes it success to the capacity of interpreting the needs and demands of those who do sport, developing high quality and technicality products. It sponsors more than 80 clubs and national teams in sports including soccer, rugby, basketball, volleyball, baseball, handball, futsal, running and now Australian Rules football. Hope Port don't cave in on Bombers demands for Fantasia , feel he is someone we don't really need with the kids coming through ie Williams , Bergman , Mead plus still have Woodcock who plays small forward role . Based on his last couple of years feel at most Fantasia worth pick 28 or preferably believe a 3rd rounder should be enough
Sometimes the old guys do know whats best

Despite the posturing from Dodo it will happen. He isn’t coming back to Essendon and has a very attractive multi year contract on the table not to mention he is currently undergoing Port’s pre season training program already (which is disappointing but understandable)

We would have chased Saad (who is ideal for that role), but he refuses to play defence, so it is what it is.
