Herald sun have attempted to compile the best team of the 21st century

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/m ... 47cf90a922

B: Enright Scarlett Johnson
HB: Hodge (C) Rance McLeod
C: Selwood Voss Pendlebury
HF: Johnson Riewoldt Hird
F: Goodes Brown Franklin
R: Cox Judd Ablett
I: Mitchell Dangerfield B Harvey Pavlich
E: Black, Buckley, Lloyd, Richardson, Swan

Always super hard to do this when careers span eras etc but it's not a bad team. Dane swan has to be in there though. Staggering they can leave him out and out someone like Selwood in there. Who is obviously a gun but wasn't to Swans level at his best.

Mark ricciuto doesn't even get a mention either. Five of his eight all Australians in this period, 2 of his 3 B&Fs and his Brownlow. I would have him in over James Hird who did more of his stuff in the 90s imo.

Relegating Buddy to a pocket is also terrible imo. He is the best forward of this era by the length of the straight.

The backline and the Ruck line pick themselves

No Tredrea.

Dismissed as credible on the spot.

He's a gun but doesn't get close compared to Riewoldt Franklin Brown imo.

Would probably make the second team of this era though.

It seems we have another believer in the "but Brown is so big and tough and therefore a better player, phwoar look how mean he is! that grimace grrr" myth that is so common in AFL circles.

Warren Tredrea was the most dominant forward (some say player) in the game from 2000-2005.

He has to be in there.

Brown was as courageous as they come.
Better kick at goal then Tredrea as well.

Brown slightly ahead of Tredrea IMO.

Riciutto probably deserves a spot but to say Hird did more of his stuff in the 90's is incorrect. Hird pretty was injured and played very little in 97,98,99. His footy in the 2000's was at a unbelievable level apart from 2002 when he had his face caved in. Many people also forget the year Roo won the Brownlow, Hird finished only 3 votes behind despite missing 9 games and was still named in the AA side.

Who does Ricciuto replace though?
Not Judd or Ablett.
Probably should be on a HFF instead of Johnson perhaps?

Selwood Johnson or Hird imo. Has as many all Australians as almost any of the others without counting the 3 in the 90s

Always impossible to pick these sorts of teams as there are so many guns that you leave out.

The second best team would almost be as good

What teams aren't represented?
I see Port aren't?
Any others?
Melbourne aren't either by the looks of it.

This.

Won't get me disagreeing with the selections of Franklin or Riewoldt, but;

4 x AA between 2001-04, no one came close to Tredders in this period as far as CHF's are concerned. Brown did not make one of these AA sides.

Probably should have had a Brownlow Medal in 2004 too.

Every player listed as an emergency makes the interchange before Brent Harvey surely?

I would have thought so too, though I guess they are giving him points for longevity.

I'd have Swan or Riccuito in over Dangerfield.

Reckon he is clearly the second best full back of the era but not close to Scarlett

It's not an original thought but it made me think again that they really should pick ceremonial state of origin teams in the same way they pick all Australian teams.

Would be a great way of trying to keep that tradition alive. And even if they never play a state of origin again, it would surely be a source of pride to say you made the south Australian team in a given year

Rutten would be close to Glass as second best?

I think Brown was busy collecting premiership medals between 2001-2003 though ;)

Jonathan Brown over Tredrea any day of the week. One of the greatest players I have seen. Had he played in SA he would have been afforded more accolades than McLeod or Wanganeen in this state
