Apparently Max Basheer's name comes off an Adelaide Oval grandstand in place of Chelsea Randall and Erin Phillips.

IMO, it's quite ironic that Leon Bignell criticizes Max Basheer's contribution to sport based on a lack of games played, yet he's a sports minister with absolutely no sporting background of note.

Stick to what you're good a, Biggles - spending other people's money on overseas junkets.

Name Adelaide Oval grandstands after AFLW Crows co-captains, says Sport Minister Leon Bignell

THE inaugural AFLW Crows premiership co-captains should have their names adorned on an Adelaide Oval grandstand, the Tourism Minister says.

In a social media post that triggered heated online debate, Leon Bignell called for Chelsea Randall and Erin Phillips to be permanently inscribed around the $535 million CBD ground.

Randall, 25, and Phillips, 31, on Saturday led the Adelaide Football Club’s maiden female team to the AFLW’s first premiership over Brisbane on the Gold Coast.

Less than half a year since the first Crows’ team was cobbled together at West Lakes and Darwin, the South Australian-NT combine defied early calls it would be an easybeat.

In a Facebook message posted within minutes of Saturday’s result, Mr Bignell wrote: “How about we finally put women’s names on the Adelaide Oval grandstands.

“Erin Phillips and Chelsea Randall co-captains of the first team to win a premiership in the AFL Women’s League. Congratulations to the Adelaide Crows. You inspired and excited an entire state in this inaugural season.

“Well done team. Today was an absolute thriller. Enjoy the celebrations. #historymakers #watchthewomen.”

He added that he had “made a concerted effort to have all women recognised”.

The post, supported by almost 400 people, triggered a lengthy debate among users, including those who questioned the timing.

In response to one claim that the women’s team had played a handful of games, Mr Bignell replied: “Max Basheer: Zero games and a grandstand named after him.”

He was referring to the SANFL’s longest-serving president and Australian football Hall of Fame inductee, who headed the state league between 1978 and 2003.

He later insisted he was not “bagging” lawyer, Mr Basheer, 89.

He added: “Women haven’t been given a look in because the people who make the decisions at Adelaide Oval are all men. They all looked after themselves when they named the stands, the bars the rooms. It’s 2017, let’s not put this off any longer.”

Did they even play a game on Adelaide Oval?

Yep.

Bignell said that:

"Women haven’t been given a look in because the people who make the decisions at Adelaide Oval are all men. They all looked after themselves when they named the stands, the bars the rooms. It’s 2017, let’s not put this off any longer.”

My question to Bignell is this: who were the women prominent in the SA football community that were overlooked by the blokes at the end of 2013/beginning of 2014 when Adelaide Oval was renovated?

Pretty ridiculous tbh. No way should they have a stand named after them after 1 season.

Not sure if this was discussed before, but if it were logistically possible, wouldn't it have made more sense to hold the AFLW granny the week before the Mens comp started?

Maybe it's a scheduling issue, but having that as a standalone game in the week where there is no JLT games makes sense to me

Maybe the intention was to hide it a bit just in case there wasn't much crowd interest in this AFLW season and risking the bad press the GF might've got?

But it was free entry, cannot be judged.

It was a talking point though so it's a start.

Wasn't just talking attendances but tv ratings, and people's general interest levels.

Even if it's free, I doubt they were expecting crowds over 10k like they consistently got.

Much better option than 1500 people paying to get in imo. (For such a short season)

Bigsy knows that over 50 per cent of voters are women. He panders to that audience regularly - grid girls, TDU girls etc.
These may be worthwhile causes, but everyone sees his contribution as political opportunism.
Funnily enough, he was Min for Sport when all of the grandstands, bars and monuments were named during the AO revamp, where was he then?

Bigsy's commentary is an ill-thought-out brain fart, but dig beyond his political posturing and there is a solid point.
It is remiss that more women in sport haven't been acknowledged. So who should be?
There are plenty of women who should be recognised before the AFLW premiership players - although, there's no doubt that Erin Phillips will/should be honoured at some point.
How about Lisa Ondieki, Glynnis Nunn, at a pinch Anna Meares? Pat Mickan, Jenny Williams? Sandy Pisani? Karen Rolton, Shelley Nitchske, Lynette Fulton? Our equestriennes? Rachel Sporn?
These are names that should be considered. Honours generally come after playing careers and these ladies are SA household names.
I'm sure there are countless administrators who could be considered as well.
A monument/monuments outside the ground shouldn't be about the contribution or involvement at AO, it should be about sport - AO is our sporting HQ.

Can't agree with that last bit DW....Anna Meares has a velodrome named after her, do footballers/cricketers get acknowledged there? Adelaide Oval should be for those that have represented the sports played there.

BTW why did Erin Phillips carry her kids out on the oval in the GF? 8th game milestone? :)

AS Minister for Sport he and everyone else for that matter he only needs to walk into SASI and see the SA Sport Hall of Fame pictures to see how women have been recognised in this state for their sporting exploits.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
