It's an interesting conversation about medals to non players. I'm the first to admit I have never been much of a footballer especially after probably the age of 22-23 when life's other influences take you away from footy (Women, work and socialising). I was lucky enough to be a part of a pretty special group of people during our clubs most successful premiership era in our entire history (number of flags, not grades it was won in). I played in 1 and wasn't picked in the second. I loved being part of the first, but I was happy for the blokes who took part in the game and the club in the second. I put my hand up to run water in the second GF and even though I didn't play it was the best day I have experienced in footy as we won 2 flags on the day.

There is no way in hell that I would want a medal for the second and I refused to be a part of the team picture, it was for the blokes who were out there. I'm thankful for playing in a flag, but I also reckon if it was my full time job my outlook on the scenario could be different.

Which is interesting because I think your right but I also thinks it's a culture thing

We have it so ingrained that the 22 who play in the grand final are the premiership players that a bloke who may have played 15 games in the season doesn't feel part of it despite playing a very important role in the side, potentially even kicking 'match winning' goals etc

What's even odder with that culture is that you won't find a football single coach, administrator etc who believes you win premierships with 22 players.

It's a different culture to what I'm use to coming from a English background in which all players who play throughout the year get a medal, even in the FA Cup who ever has played at any stage through out the cup will receive a medal on cup final day. Because there is the culture installed players would never refuse to take their medal because they didn't play in the final as they believe their early performances make them apart of the big prize.

In the NBA the rings can be given to anyone involved in the club, that can be players, coaches, administrative staff, they can get one for he janitor if they choose to

I did get into the team photo but I haven't been to any formal reunions because I wasn't part of the team that won. Why you would want a tokenistic medal is beyond me. I think it devalues the medal itself if you hand them out to everyone. My medal wouldn't mean as much as the bloke who won it.

I wonder if you ask those guys that missed out like Blake Hartung Suckling Jong McGlynn (random names of guys that missed their flags) if they firstly want a medal or would think it meant the same as the 22 that received one. That might give us more of an insight on whether they should strike more medals.

Like I said the players don't feel apart of it but I bet if u ask the club president, coaches, administration, supporters etc they would say they are apart of it.

I just find it abit ironic that we spend the whole year preaching squads win flags etc at and then when a team wins we only recognise the 22 who played in which case a lot of times are less deserving

Anyway I don't think there is a right or wrong just a preference

In the year where he played and got injured I wouldn't have had a problem with him getting one and I would consider him to be part that premiership squad

How far do you take it though? I think to single out Murphy was wrong, in playing terms they had some 1st or 2nd year players play more games than Bob. So then does it become a medal for anyone that contributes as someone alluded to in the NBA, the janitor can get one. Does Brendan McCartney get one, he put them on the right path?
Does Liam Jones get one, he freed up a spot on the list for someone that can actually play
I dont really have a problem with the Bulldogs under their roof having more medals struck if thats their choice to give out in house but the medals on the day should be for participants.

Not entirely true, Premier League players need to make 5 appearances to be given a medal but given there is no finals it's a bit hard to compare the two.

Leave it at the 22. If you give it to the squad you could end up with the situation that people who are on the list but may never play an AFL game get given a premiership medallion.

If I were Bob Murphy I would probably have been embarrassed to accept it. There's no way I would have wanted it, but I don't think he can be accused of stealing the spotlight.
