Talk on the national game

I don't get what the big deal is about crowds at AO or anywhere else for that matter. Couldn't care less how many opposition supporters turn up. And in UK Fans case, when he goes in a few weeks time, he'll have no problem finding his seat, getting a beer or a Chiko Roll..... So the crowds drop off when the weather gets cold/wet... . What do you expect?
1961, 1971, 1976, 1978, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015.... And don't you forget it!

There is a small point to be made though.

How does AFL clubs stop what we see here as the natural decline in crowds based on performance?

It seems to be a massive issue with AFL clubs that we believe is just natural and unavoidable.

I was looking at the average EPL crowds over the weekend and performance doesnt seem to have anywhere near as big an impact on average attendances.

Take West Ham

14/15- ladder position 11th- ave crowd- 34 130
15/16- ladder position 7th- ave crowd- 34 910 (this included being the last ever season at that ground

Take Leicester
14/15- just avoided relegation- ave crowd- 31 693
15/16- win the league- ave crowd- 32 021

Take Aston Villa
14/15 just avoid relegation- ave crowd- 34 133
15/16- worse team in history almost- ave crowd- 33 690

Most of the other teams have very similar numbers as well no matter what their performance was. There is no where neat that massive peak and low.

With these figures as well they are almost apples for apples as part from 3 teams the teams play the same amount of home games and nearly against identical clubs.

What do the AFL clubs do wrong.

Is it the lack of 'tribal' support you see in the AFL.

The main answer lies in the very numbers you've quoted. 30-35k in each case. Adelaide Oval holds over 50k. Far more room for fickle fans to get along to a game whereas in the UK, if you're not a diehard you can't get a ticket for every game as easily.

What about the likes of Chelsea

14/15 Champions - 41 540
15/16 9th- 41 500

Even Man U, Arsenal and Newcastle who all have stadiums of 50k have none to very little crowd fluctuations.

Is that what the AFL clubs do wrong that they don't play at stadiums in which they can sell 95+% of their tickets because of the urgency it creates.

Would it be better for a club to consistently get say 40k regardless of performance than to float between 30-50k depending on form.

the difference is chelsea probably have a few million supporters just in london alone, and their stadium is nowhere big enough. Their worldwide support means it is an event just to see a single game. The support is just massive. So even if they are going terribly it wont matter for that reason.

It's human nature to find there are times that entertainment is a higher or lower priority based on a number of factors. The quality of that entertainment is one such factor. Is it better to have an arena where those who might prefer to not come along sometimes can't go anyway? IMHO it's not. Far better to have a game that's accessible enough that the less parochial can get along too.

100% agree. If you dont have casual "bandwagon" supporters your club will die

Only asked the question mr boon.

38000 brilliance!!!!! Crowds have only fallen by 10000 in just 2 seasons at Adelaide Oval.

Winter is upon us and a Sub 30000 is due soon and Im looking forward to the excuses when it does.

It's interesting isn't it.

I can't work out if its simply an anti-port thing, or if its more to do with the fact he was anti the redevelopment, and port are simply the first team to provide numbers that support his theory that AO should never had footy on it.

Probably a bit of both.

Well if you go back and look at his posts its alot of things. Yes he doesn't like Port Adelaide, he is No AFL in the SANFL, against the development as it benifited the AFL clubs who he has a beef with.

It may also be the coldness of the UK. But as we have seen trolling is generally tolerated when its targeted at specific groups.

Hence dont hold your breath about the mods stepping in. Just tolerate the little fella and feed him a bone now and again.

Think it is more to do with the argument that Adelaide Oval was going to be the saviour of the Port Adelaide Football Club.

The crows have always had more supporters and are playing better footy at the moment, so it's hardly surprising that their crowds are bigger.

Reckon the crowds have been pretty good for port.

What sort of Crowds would Port have been getting the past 18 months at Footy Park? Not 40k+ consistently I wouldn't think.

Still think AO is good for Port, good for footy and good for SA

Ports crowds truly aren't that bad.
However, while they may not be that bad - what do they need to turn a profit?

Yeah I didn't realise I had both home & away listed when I first typed

Moral of the story is, it isn't all doom and gloom and the figures far exceed those that Port had when they were at Footy Park - even in successful seasons, so the move to AO is clearly a good one.

That's an interesting question, you would think they'd work off a 30k attendance to break even? Well I would
