I think that's a bit harsh, he's Mr May, June, July and August too generally.

Amazing what you can do when you run around by yourself for your whole career. Having said that though he is brilliant with his positioning, hands and awareness of the game. Since Ling has gone he's torn us a new one every time.

He does get free reign hey, I'm astounded by how often he's left unattended, he's done exceptionally well considering he's never been overly blessed with pace, very Dieselish.

I don't recall anyone by the name of Wayne Johnston playing AFL finals either DOOL, or are you trying to say that the only history prior to the AFL was Victorian?

No im saying this is an AFL thread, go and start the topic in the SANFL thread

So why just pick on the mention of SANFL players? There's been Royce Hart and Wayne Johnston as candidates before I mentioned Rick yet for some reason you choose to take umbrage at the latter and ignore the former.
Surely you'll acknowledge that footy existed before the AFL, I dare say the game played at the highest level represents that history. I'll be stuffed if Sturt wasn't regularly beating the likes of Carlton and Hawthorn around that time. I say either there's no history or you acknowledge that the game existed in South Australia before the corporates arrived and rewrote a set of Victorian centric rules to the detriment of Australian football in general

There is an SANFL thread you know?

To believe that Sturt or any other SANFL club would have been competitive against serious VFL clubs in a real competition (not 'carnival' type games) prior to 1990 is a tad niaive IMO. But that's for another thread.

I'll take the bait

if you think the Port side of 1980, the Sturt side of the late 60s, North of the early 70s, Westies of 83 and the Bays of 85 wouldn't have been competietive agaisnt VFL sides of their respective era's you are vey much mistaken.

This is based on the players who played in those sides (particularly Port of 1980 and Glenelg of 85) who then went to the VFl and AFL and had better careers than most.

Similarly South Fremantle's side of 1980 would have been more than competieitve as well when you think it had the likes of Stephen Michael, Brad Hardie and Maurice Rioli running around

I'm confident they would've played finals, Yes the best sides of the VFL were better than the best sides of the SANFL and WANFL (as it was known back then) but our better sides would have beaten their worst sides and would have finsished any where from eight to fourth.

This is not just my opinion this is the opinion of someone who went from North Adelaide in the early 80s and then over to Saint Kilda to play and was shocked at how the poor the skill of some of the players were and how un-professional they were.

So yes Rick Davies is more than eligible for the title Mr September

North Adelaide of 86 beat Melbourne here and Collingwood at Waverley. The Bays didn't do much though.

So what?
Rick Davies is the third player to be mentioned on this thread who didn't play AFL. The first two are followed by positive discussion, yet I've been told twice now that Davies doesn't belong here.
If Hart and Johnston are legitimate, then you're admitting that players from the highest quality leagues prior to the AFL are eligible.
As I mentioned, Sturt claimed some pretty hefty VFL scalps back in the day, actually thrashed a couple of them . It was partially because they performed so well that a regular "official" championship of Australia was set up. Which was actually won by North Adelaide.
Don't you know any of this?
There is a problem with the rest of Australian football history being swept under the carpet because of the hubris of the old VFL.I find it amazing how passively some people have followed this contrived rubric of footy history. Tell people often enough that it is so, and it will become so.

Spot on Davies belongs there. Yeah it's an AFL board but Jumbo was a winner.

Wow! And I'm sure those Vic clubs would've thrown absolutely everything at North in those vital clashes

Collingwood might not have thrown the kitchen sink at it, but they wouldn't have wanted to lose to some South Australian club no-one in Melbourne gave a stuff about on home soil. I can't remember who went into these games favorites, but I'd doubt North were objectively favoured to win. Don't forget the Victorian arrogance and disrespect that was dished out towards anything outside of Melbourne at the time.

So, on that note, North Adelaide's 1986 side is the frontrunner for Mr July/August. ;) Certainly not Mr September (or Mr October) that year.

They did, played full teams. Treated them no different than the SANFL clubs.
