Talk on the national game

Mr September

Postby JK » Wed Aug 12, 2015 12:12 pm

SEN were holding some pretty good discussion this morning after one of the Melbourne journos (think it was Jon Ralph) labelled Shaun Burgoyne as "Mr September".

Prompted some pretty entertaining calls, one of which mentioned a Brisbane ruckman you hardly saw from rounds 3-18, yet he'd be there every GF day playing well. Phil Baker from North was another name mentioned.

Crows fans I'd imagine would be quick to chuck Andrew McLeods name up and with good reason.

Any other players that have a habit of finding their best form in September?

If you mention Andrew McLeod (and with good reason I agree), surely Luke Hodge and Gary Ayres rate a mention as the only other dual Norm Smith Medallists.

Yep for sure.

Interestingly Zac Dawson was twice awarded St Kilda's player of the finals series award. Might explain why they fell short lol

Wayne Johnston had reasonable claims on two Norm Smith Medals but ended up with none unfortunately.

Royce Hart was always a big time player in the finals,
From Game Saving Marks to kicking goals to get his team back into a final Royce was the Man.

He always saved his best for the finals. Just ask Collingwood or Carlton the teams he tormented the most kicking 28 goals against them in 13 games!!!!

His finals record for Richmond was 15-4-1
Against the teams in the finals he was

Carlton 5-2-1
Geelong 2-0
Collingwood 5-0
North Melbourne 2-1
St Kilda 1-1

He kicked 41 goals from his finals appearances averaging 2 goals a game and in the later stages of his career only played 1/2 a game in each final due to his knee injuries but still rose to the occasion each time when required to get his beloved Tigers over the line.
2017, 2019 & 2020 PREMIERS
RICHMOND, RICHMOND, RICHMOND.

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.

Amazing what you can do when you run around by yourself for your whole career. Having said that though he is brilliant with his positioning, hands and awareness of the game. Since Ling has gone he's torn us a new one every time.
