I hated him then. I hate him now. If not for Shane Mumford he'd still be most despised football villain.

Do we think a bloke like Diesel would actually be any good in modern day football. Would there be a place for solely and in and under type with no leg speed at all.

I actually don't think his football smarts would be enough in modern day footy, he would just get bullied at the ball ups by the likes of 6ft Cripps, Fyfe, Martin, Bontempelli.

Great footballer in his era though.

In his day, it did. Yep slow heavy legged plodder. Great hands, quick brain. Could play.

Yeah no denying his brilliance in his day.

I picked my 3 based on who I wanted in my team if they were playing AFL as its played this weekend.

You’d take Fev over Sticks?

Loved SOS as a player but I couldn’t find room for him in my top 3.

Cannot compare eras ever, let alone someone like him or McDermott in todays game.

Williams certainly wouldn't get away with being a filthy little prick in packs like he did then.

Yes.

I concede it's tempting to view the Fyfe, Cripps, Pendlebury body types dominating midfield these days as making it very difficult for Diesel types.

And that would be true in most cases.

The problem for those blokes is that Diesel would get his hands on the footy first.

Yeah Sam Mitchell was one who came to mind when trying to compare Williams. Out of curiosity it would be interesting to know what their running capabilities compared like.

A norm smith
team of the century

Pretty sure he'd still go alright in this era

In 30 years time people will be saying that cripps and fyfe wouldnt survive in the 2050's

I think this is the problem with modern footy. Clever but slower players don't (or mightn't) have a role in the game. If these type of players are lost, does it make the game better?

Personally, I don't think he'd make it today because of all the scouting that's done, they'd look past him because he mightn't be able to get to each contest. When he did, he tore it up but nowadays, unless he got fitter and worked on his aerobic fitness he wouldn't get selected IMO.

Carlton rejected him twice in the early 80s for those exact reasons. Then paid massive money to get him 10 years later.
