Sounds like he might've added 13th to the 12 days of Crows' Christmas.

He must of been hanging out with Steven Motlop

Over a 2km run?

The story on Menzel's poor training gets louder and louder. Was listening to some Crows people yesterday and Menzel's poor training form and poor running times was a big discussion point.

did he come back to training out of shape or is he just mentally weak? I find it hard to comprehend someone of his build not being about to run out a 2k time trial.

Interesting.

So that could show a few things

1. He is very unfit in general, and struggled at carlton too
2. He let himself go over the summer
3. Carlton's training is very different to the crows
4. all of the above

i tend to think 4

edit: mighty hounds beat me to it

Most likely he just isnt as fit. Whilst he has probably put in poor times this does not suggest he isnt applying himself.

He has had injuries and still only fairly young and wouldn't have had many AFL preseasons.

also would have thought he is basically going to be our replacement for betts in a couple of years time, so he may not get much game time this year

Different type of player to Betts. More of a half forward / mid type. I would say Cameron is being groomed for a Betts replacement.

yeah i meant that i dont think there is necessarily room for 3 small forwards, betts, cameron, menzel, so menzel will likely only get regular games when betts retires.

Thats unless they want to push cameron or betts into the midfield more

Can't imagine any AFL footballer being resigned to waiting to replace a player in a couple of years. Especially one who has played senior footy already and was traded in. Definitely think they will be looking at full time midfield duties probably shared between Betts, Menzel and Cameron. Reckon they could all play in the forward line together too. Menzel and Betts play like mid size forwards most of the time anyway.

Reckon the answer lies partly in this being an exaggeration and the kid just miscalculating. Can't imagine Carlton are so far behind or that he would have lost so much fitness. Likely went out too hard trying to impress and blew up. Doubt there will be anyone saying in August that his season was wrecked because he couldn't run out the first time trial.

"Went out too hard and blew up" on a 2k run?

Menzel's done three pre-seasons, so by now he should have an idea of what's expected of a professional footballer. I would've thought a new player keen to impress and gain selection would keep fit, even when on leave from club duties. Going too hard and not completing a 2km run would suggest a lack of fitness.

Mind you, he has been injury prone, so perhaps he's simply injured as opposed to being a bit porky after Christmas. If it's the latter, the Crows have every right to be disappointed. By the same token, if it's the former, then he probably shouldn't be running time trials.
