St Kilda under Scott Watters

Scott Watters seems to be narrowing his focus too much towards his home state, Western Australia, in his forward planning.

During the trade period, St Kilda used pick 13 to recruit Tom Lee from WAFL club Claremont. Whilst Lee is coming off a very good season for the Tigers, he's already had one crack at AFL footy (with the Adelaide Crows) and I think it's fair to say that the Saints have paid over the odds for him. Effectively he's a replacement for Brendon Goddard!

Another recruitment which has Watter's influence written all over it is the signing of Trent Dennis-Lane from the Sydney Swans. He might have been a key player for Watters when he coached Subiaco to the 2009 WAFL premiership but the lightly-framed forward has found the going at AFL level a bit tough.

Add to the Saint's assistant coaching panel former WAFL coaches Simon McPhee (Claremont) and Tony Micale (East Perth) and an imbalance towards WA is starting to emerge.

As inaugural coach of the Fremantle Dockers, Gerard Neesham oversaw the recruitment of too many players he coached at Claremont and this monocular view robbed the Dockers of a better balanced set-up in their formative years.

I hope Watters is not falling into the same trap!

Too late.
He did that when he agreed to coach them. He'll be tainted with the stench of
failure for the rest of his sporting life.
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.
