Hawkins' 2012 - Overrated

For years, particularly on some online forums, Tommy Hawkins has copped more than his share of unfair knocks. Dennis Pagan unhelpfully labelled a young Hawkins as a 'Lockett' after he kicked a few goals against his Carlton rabble a few years ago. In more recent times Hawkins has been unfairly critisised by footy observers because he hadn't kicked on like some had thought he should.

Now Tom Hawkins has come of age. He's won the Carji and got an AA gong but to me I don't think his form has warranted either honour. There is no doubt that Hawkins has become a vital player for the Cats almost to the point of shutting him down can now cost us victory as our spread of goal options diminishes. His second half of the season was something special but for him to rightfully earn the awards he has been given I reckon he needs to produce such form over the full season not just the latter part of it.

There were many times in the early to mid parts of the season where Tom's inaccuracy in front of goals cost us games and squandered the hard work of our undermanned midfield outfit. I believe that Tom Loneragan is one Cat who is more deserving of the honours that Tomohawk has won and I'd have Kelly, Johnson, Taylor and Selwood all ahead of Tom as well.

Tom is a much improved player and a key to the Cats but for me his 2012 wasn't good enough to earn a Cargi and an AA spot and his season has been overrated both inside and outside the club.

I agree. I also think that most of the current key/big forwards, excepting possibly Buddy (whose kicking can let him down considerably anyway), are over rated due to their inconsistency. I must admit though, I've loved the growth and development of Tex this season - it just shows how Craig under valued him.

How do you rate Cloke alongside Hawkins?

Career goes to Cloke, this year to Hawkins. Wouldn't want to swap.

Pretty good call, I think.

I think an AA spot, as demonstrated with some of this seasons selections ( why wasn't Reiwoldt FF ahead of Hawkins? ) show that is a raffle, but to knock a B&F which is judged by people within the club is a bit harder to do.

Perhaps his brillance when holding the ball in his hands is now complimented by his work off the ball ( often not seen on TV footage ) that has earnt him much more credits within the club this season?

Clearly he has turned a corner, perhaps maturity, perhaps fitness, perhaps more opportunity with Mooney out of his way but I expect bigger and better things from this monster in the coming years.

But hey, you're the Cats fan. ;)

Well he's had the workrate for a number of years (hence my belief earlier baggings were undeserved), this is something that is not unique to his 2012 season. It could be a reward for perserverence and hard work as Tom is a confidence player as he has shown many times (as a lot of goal kickers are).

Not spewing, merely perplexed. Maybe someone will rate Lonners after he retires.

Maybe just look at some crude stats. Most marks inside 50 for the AFL, runner up in Coleman. Perhaps you're underselling him a bit.

Nah. I know he had a good year but was it that good? Second in the Coleman isn't a biggie when Franklin had six weeks off with a *cough* hamstring injury. Meanwhile Tom Lonnegan won the reverse Coleman (The Rod Carter medal? LOL). I just thought a few other Cats had better years than Tom.

Big call to say overrated internally unless you are in there. Id say he probably won the B&F because he does exactly what is asked of him in every game. Probably the same reason Kane Cornes won Ports. I dont agree with either of the results but obviously the coaching staff feel he did what they asked every week.
