http://www.portadelaidefc.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/6038/newsid/138029/default.aspxBartlett Wants To Dump InterchangeAFL LEGEND and rules committee veteran Kevin Bartlett has proposed scrapping the interchange system and replacing it with eight soccer-style substitutes.
Flagging serious consequences if nothing is done, Bartlett said the game is "becoming like rugby" and is being tactically "hijacked" by interchanges.
"I'm confident the game would be better without interchange, pick your best 18 and have six to eight players on the bench to cover injury and flexibility for the coach, but once you've come off, you can't come back on," Bartlett told his SEN listeners.
"No longer is the bench about covering injured players, interchange is now running at an average of 129 per game," he said.
"Interchange has hijacked the game to such a point now that it's becoming like rugby, it's not an indigenous game of Australian Rules football any more.

What a f**King wa*ker, says the game is becoming more like rugby but he wants to make the game more like soccer!

If he comes up with more ideas like this he will destroy the game, he seriously needs to be sacked ASAP.
Our game is like no other and the interchange is a part of what makes it unique, stop changing/trying to change the game I love you f**king goal-hog piece of shit!!

I think Kevin and his friends on the Rules Committee should take a very long holiday and leave our great game alone. As my old pappy said "If it ain't broke, don't try fixin it" Regards Grafter

What a terrible idea, KB and the rules committee should be removed from the game as soon as possible, he has done enough damage to the game as it is

I was listening to this being discussed on SEN .. I would never support such a move, but I do think it's an interesting thought

Substitutes don't work in Aussie Rules. The grounds are big and the workload on players is such that coaches need the flexibility to be able to bring blokes off for an occasional rest, treat minor injuries, give the occasional rebuke and replace them for a period of time.
But because interchange is now cynically abused and used more for tactical purposes than for genuinely resting players, I think the time has come to put a cap on them. I'd like to see a limit of 20 rotations per quarter (excluding Blood Rule). This is more than enough and it would almost certainly eliminate the frivolous use of rotations e.g. where a bloke sprints off the ground straight after kicking a goal.

So he wants to make it less like rugby by introducing a rule that rugby has?
Great footballer Kevin but obviously not the brightest spark.

Agree JK and westozfalcon, probably not something I'd like to see, but he shouldn't be lambasted for bringing the idea up for discussion.
Another possibility would players having to be off for a minimum of 5 minutes (blood and legitimate stretcher replacements excluded).

Just once I would like to see them leave a rule alone long enough to see if it is having an impact on the game, FFS they have just brought in the Sub rule. How can you possible get enough data from half a season to see if it is having the desired effect?
They are constantly changing other rules as a result of the rules they have made up to combat other rules! Leave the ******* game alone!!

I tend to agree - though perhaps I'd say
10 a quarter to reduce the tactical use a bit more...
The blood rule alone makes the substitutes only idea unrealistic.

Exactly and I think the stupid 8 subs idea will cause more and more injuries to players, they would bust their nut and would have to stay on the ground for alot longer than what they would with the current interchange situation and would fatigue alot faster therefore having a higher chance of getting an injury.

I fail to see why the increased interchanges is an issue at all.

Other than the fact both teams at the moment only have 16 or 17 players in the play due to the constant stream of players coming on and off.
Note how often a player sprints 80+ metres to get off the ground only to be sent back out 10-15 seconds later. Barely enough time to recover from the sprint he just endured to get off the ground!
