Geelong Season 2012

Round 1 playing Fremantle in Perth.
Still havent had the chance to unfurl our flag at our home ground in the first round for the fourth time in a row. Last time we did was in 1953.

Not a common practice now wedgie which is a shame, not even collingwood got to do it this season. IIRC we had to wait until round 2 in 05 for ours.

AFL should definately take that into consideration when doing the fixture, they know who the reiging premier is and should give them the right to host a home game in round 1 to unfurl the flag.

Yeah but its not like Collingwood win every 2nd year like we do.
You'd think they'd give us at least one chance to do it once in the last 4 reigning premiership years!
Mind you being at Footy Pk against Port in Round 1 in 2008 was fun. I've never seen so many guernseys with the number 119 on it!

IIRC didnt Collingwood this year opt to play RD 1 against Port at Etihad because they wanted to unveil the flag at a blockbuster match at the MCG?

Off topic, what happened to the GF rematch anyway?

We played freo in round 1 05, cant remember if sydney and west coast played each other in 06 and 07.....then the afl arranged it for 08 and 09 and now its tapered off again.

Sounds about right bigshow, well imo the afl should a) arrange the reiging premier to play at home in round 1 to unfurl the flag and b) arrange it against the premiers grand final opponent.

i 100% agree. said it a couple years ago, before the Richmond v Carlton Thursday night became the "traditional" ipening match, that it should be a GF Rematch to kick off the year.

i think i read somewhere that this years opener will be GWS v Sydney, which i don't mind, probably 150point win to the swannies, what i'm not impressed with, it's to be 5 on the Saturday night before the traditional Rich v Carl on the Thursday night.

As I posted in one of the last pages of the 2011 thread, it's still a bloody good time to be a Geelong supporter, we had three retirements from club LEGENDS (Milburn, Mooney and Ling), but had a number of players step up from nowhere, all of whom are ready-made AFL players, and look to be 200+ gamers (Christensen, Vardy, Menzel, Duncan) as well as a guy who's been around a little while longer in Trent West.
The breakout 2011 for those five names more than counteracts the loss of three guns, the only question is how do we fit them all in the side?
Tom Hawkins, who, upon debut, I did compare him with, and claim he would be the next, Tony Lockett. Instead, he has become the first Tom Hawkins.

Hawkins will have the luxury to be a stay at home forward, probably centre half forward, with the J-Pod controlling the full forward area.
The issue will be how to fit Ottens, Vardy and West in the team as well- Ottens won't play the full year, so that will be a waters-testing time for the Cats big men, but we will endure.

Chapman, Kelly, Enright, Corey, Selwood running through the middle is an awesome group, but when you throw in Byrnes, Menzel, Duncan, Stokes, Christensen, etc, it's a dynasty...

They probably wont bother sending Ottens interstate for games unless really short in the big men.

Oh god, we've announced Matthew Knights as the coach of our VFL side.
The previous coach Dale Amos has become an assitant for the AFL side.
