It was less an error in trading than one of drafting, but having traded into the top three of the 1999 draft, the Tigers were expected to make the most of it. They didn't, taking South Australian wingman Aaron Fiora ahead of SA key forward Matthew Pavlich. Fiora's glorious kick camouflaged an appetite for the contest that didn't always meet the expectations of the demanding Richmond faithful and he lasted just five years and 78 games before a move to St Kilda.

King fired precious few shots at Tigerland and although McKee wasn't a great deal better for Collingwood, he played an important role in the Magpies' run to the 2002 grand final. Meanwhile, a gleeful Fremantle landed the best player in the club's two-decade history and one of the game's modern greats in Pavlich.

The deal: Richmond trade Steve McKee and pick 7 to Collingwood for Clinton King and pick 3.
What could have been: Matthew Pavlich (taken at pick 4), Joel Corey (pick 8), Darren Glass (pick 11), Robert Murphy (pick 13), Brad Green (pick 19).

Stephen O'Rielly to Carlton. IIRC he's the one that led to the salary cap snafu that put the Bluebaggers on the outer for a decade. Perhaps a Carlton fan would not like to elaborate. THAT was a doozy!

Freo had a couple of entries on that top 10 trade disasters I think Booney got the Fiora one from

Arguably they handed 2 premierships to the Crows with what must have been one of their first ever trades. I think Chris Groom played less than 20 games total.

Freo are the only "expansion" club that failed to win a premiership in their first 15 years. Brisbane took 14, Adelaide 6, West Coast 5, Port 7.

Why are Freo the exception when they had the same concessions as Port Adelaide? Too many early trading and list management disasters.

I think they were short-sighted and looking for competitiveness in the short-term. If they were willing to wear a little pain in the early years, like GCS and GWS will do, they could have developed a formidable group.

Gotta give the Power some credit there ... Unlike the Crows and Freo, they didn't load up on once decent players that were past their best, or all local content, but put a strong emphasis on young players that were likely to develop into quality.

I think Bucky Cunningham and the team down there did a great job planning and managing their early lists. One key early trade was Eagleton for Bishop and Montgomery (from memory). They had a surplus of Eagleton types but lacked experienced AFL hardnuts and traded to fix the gap. They swapped Bode to the Crows for pick 11 or so and used that to draft Shaun Burgoyne. There was a time in the early 2000s where I felt Port had beaten the Crows hands down in recruiting between 1997 and then.

I think it has swung back in the Crows favour since 2004.

I read where in about 2004 the recruiting staff budget was $25K and for example Jarod Oakley-Nicholls was taken in the top ten and not watched by anyone from the club but recommended on one game!

Yep, we've been pretty terrible. The Tambling/Franklin one will always haunt us, althought getting rid of him last year for two draft picks was almost as good as the original pick was stupid.

Tambling/Franklin trade faux pas is second only to the infamous Groom/McLeod.

By the end of his career, Buddy might put his trade as the number one, but not in my eyes.

Tambling can play footy, his body has been letting him down since almost day one. It's not something clubs could predict, although they're getting better at that.
