Dean Wallis, Essendon assistant coach, has been named in a probe into betting on his team last week, as mentioned on the Footy Show last night.

Not good for Essendon before finals next week.

He is denying putting the bet on for himself. Stating he put it on for a mate. If it's true and he didn't influence the decision, nothing wrong with it IMO

so are you blokes saying that by placing a bet he was then able to manipulate the outcome of the game to suit his own ends?

No, what we're saying, is he is a dickhead for doing it (if he did) and he will lose his job if he is found guilty. Seriously, how dumb must the bloke be, especially after all the publicity recently

I've got to agree with you Bum Crack

skypilot - it's the thin edge of the wedge. You go hard on these incidents to hopefully avoid the scenario you mention in the future.

My point is that Wallis is not playing in the game so whether or not he lays a bet on it, isn't it at his own risk? How could he possibly manipulate the outcome? If he was a player then he could easily screw up in the name of collecting a bet. But as as an assistant coach with Hirdy and Thompson and Goodwin all breathing down his neck how in hell could he alter the natural course of the game.

No AFL employee is allowed to lay a bet on any AFL game. It comes under insider trading as he was be privvy to knowledge that the ordinary punter is not

"Hey Hirdy... I recken you should put Colyer in the ruck mate!"

the fact of the matter is he bet on an afl game.. and one including his team and he will get in deep doggy doo doo for it.

Amazed he had the cognitive skills to complete the betting slip, if, and I say IF, he was betting on an AFL game involving his club on behalf of a friend given the recent attention surrounding AFL gambling.

I always thought he was stupid, I under rated his stupidity somewhat, however.

Stupid is is stupid does.

You read about Shaw/Maxwell etc? The league bosses could not have made it any clearer. Zero bets to be laid and in turn zero tolerance will be showed.

Yes, I agree, he would have trouble influencing the outcome of a game ( sure didnt when he was playing -thug ) as an assistant coach but he must know, NO BETTING! Dumb. Arse.

Cover King... If that is true, then he is dumber than the dumbest person I have ever met. It is so blatantly put out there that you, as an AFL employee (player, coach, waterboy, doesn't matter), simply cannot place a bet on an AFL match. If the mate could not have found anyone else to place a bet for him, I would be very surprised. The fact that he's come up with such a ridiculous cover story is even more laughable...

No-Mercy... Before the name was released, and at work we'd only heard an AFL assistant coach, I was thinking Goodwin!!!

Now THAT would have been stupid...

THE AFL is likely to investigate a successful betting plunge on Gold Coast defender Nathan Bock to kick the first goal against Hawthorn on Saturday.

Bock started in the forward line for the first time this season and backed in from $101 to $21 pre-match, raising suspicions at TAB Sportsbet.

The rush of money for Bock on Saturday morning - to win "at least $10,000 to $20,000 or more" - has led to claims confidential Suns team selection information leaked out.

"Obviously somebody knew he was going to play up forward," a TAB bookmaker said.

"The bets came for Bock in the morning and created some interest here."

The AFL, already reeling from a betting scandal involving Essendon assistant coach Dean Wallis, appears certain to look into the obvious betting irregularity.
