If your lot tried to tank you'd make the finals.

If they're going to be serious about investigating anything they should also have a look at Melbourne in 2003 (only got Sylvia and McLean so it didn't work out real well) and Collingwood in 2005 (ended up getting 2 guns in Thomas and Pendlebury) just off the top of my head.

Can clearly remember one of the betting agencies suspending the Collingwood V Adelaide head to head bet in a late 2005 encounter at AAMI stadium on the Friday before the Saturday match because - their words not mine - "we know they're not fair dinkum".

The AFL has brought this whole "tanking" issue on themselves .. It's their system that allows it to happen. In the business of football, why wouldn't clubs make a crap year crappier to reap the rewards for it?

Collingwood, Melbourne, St Kilda, Carlton, West Coast and Port are all teams that IMHO have tanked at some stage and I don't blame them one bit .. I've always been surprised that a club like the Crows haven't bottomed out at some stage to reap the eventual benefits.

IMHO, Ports plan all along for this season has been to get games into the kids sometimes at the expenses of some victories, load up on draft picks, particularly by the time the 2012 superdraft MkII rolls around.

Having achieved their other key goal of financial security, their plan would be all about hitting the Adelaide Oval era with a decent enough product to put on display .. And again IMHO, it's sensible thinking and planning by the club.

Totally agree JK.
West Coast seem to be able to make their cycles shorter than other teams, and if they don't think they're a realistic chance, there's no hanging around hoping.
You don't get anywhere in the AFL by finishing higher than expected or having a Cinderella season, ie Port in 2007 trying to hold on to their era.
And the Crows have been too honest for their own good by trying to make the finals every year. Last year had the perfect oportunity to finish bottom, get a couple of top 10 draft picks that everyone other than Gold Caost couldn't, and then set themselves up for 2012-14 before Gold Coast are a serious premiership threat.

Fellas top 10 picks are a gamble. The whole draft is a gamble, unless you finish dead last and get pick 1 and 2. If i recall thomas and pendlebury werent in that category, both however top 10 picks yes. Other clubs could have taken them with earlier picks but didnt for whatever reason. So you cant use those two examples in your argument. Tanking is rife however and the afl refuse to acknowledge it.
They will get rid of the priority picks at some stage hopefully so the bottom clubs will be fair dinkum in the future.

But there is no doubt that on a regular basis top 10 draft picks , many of them, become top 10% of the competition at differing times during their careers. Sure, you get 20/30/40's being top quality but I think the real cream of the competiton were taken fairly high.

With the GC and GWS entry and the GWS having 2012 to snaffle more players and 2011 to "lock away " however many 17 year olds the very worst time to bottom out is not only now, but for the next 3-5 years. Those top 10 picks Port, Brisbane,Richmond, Adelaide and co. could have got this year, are gone. They get them in 2-3 years from now and its another 2-3 before many of them are up to speed, this is a 6-8 year process I find my club going into and see a couple of others not too much better off.

Previously 3 or 4 wins gave you a priority pick that could have got you ( and for Melbourne, they did ) a Scully and Trengove. All of us would admit these are two very promising players. Why wouldn't Bailey do, as he said "The right thing by the Melbourne football club".

The AFL turned a blind eye to his comments and accepting that "....trying young players in a new position is completely acceptable" is acknowledging what we all know.

This year and next Port, Brisbane, Richmond and Adelaide truly cop the penalty for bottming out now to help the GC and GWS projects along so those 4 clubs are getting burnt while Melbournes coach at the time admits to doing it. Really poor effort.

Collingwood were woeful that day. However I saw Malthouse's at half time heading down the stairs from the coaches box to the rooms and he was fuming.....
