Simply Footy axed

WHEN Channel 10 lost the AFL rights this year, Corey Wingard contemplated his future.

The opportunity to take a voluntary redundancy as part of the network's mass job cuts then came at the right time for the Simply Footy host and seasoned sports presenter.

"I'm looking for a bit of a change and to see what's out there," Corey tells Confidential. "I had a few business ideas I had been working on in the background.

"Taking sport off (Ten's former sports-only digital channel) One and losing the AFL footy were deal-breakers for me."

After 12 years in the job - and 10 years and 250 episodes of Simply Footy under his belt - Corey made the big decision to take the redundancy and finish up at the end of the footy season.

It's a bittersweet moment for Corey, who has to farewell his show, similar to the way Keith Conlon has had to come to grips with Channel 9 axing Postcards.

"That (Simply Footy) won't go on next year because Ten don't have the footy rights, Ten have said that, which is a little sad," he says.

Had the pleasure of working with Corey in my early footy media days when he did SANFL commentary on 5DN about 10 years back.

Back then I was just an annoying regular talk back caller in their post game show (5pm to 6pm) who used to give post match reports .... but Corey and Rob Popplestone encouraged me to to help their coverage ... so one thing led to another ... and I was doing official around the ground reports for them and RPH .... then someone was sick so I filled in with the RPH commentary crew .... then the person who was sick never came back .... and ..... and now I'm in my 9th year on the air calling SANFL footy.

So to Corey, thanks for the encouragement, hope it all works out for you.

All the best to Corey, a very genuine nice bloke who basically comes across in real life like he does on TV except with some swear words added. ;)
Didn't know me from a bar of soap when I met him but enjoyed a good chat on SANFL footy and a very nice bloke to talk to.
