port & their colors

Postby bayman » Fri Jul 08, 2011 9:36 pm

can someone explain to littlebayman (because i can't) why port are not allowed to wear the traditional black & white because of collingwoods rejection yet geelong, north melbourne & carlton have blue & white in their colors (different shades of blue but blue nevertheless) so why can't port ? given the fact the jumpers would be a different design & i'm sure they wore the ''prison bar'' jumpers at least once in the afl
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

The answer you are looking for is Eddie McGuire

This pansy got on his high horse about Collingwood being the only black and white team in the AFL and Andy D hasn't got the balls to tell him to shove it where the sun don't shine.

IIRC Collingwood copied the black and white colour scheme off a team in South Australia?????

I think it's because the existing B&W team (Collingwood) got to have their say in 1996 when the new mob came in whereas 100 years or whatever ago the teams probably just joined together in a league and their colours were their colours. When NM joined in 1925 perhaps the different shade of blue was enough to keep Geelong and Carlton happy.

I think Collingwood had too much say in it truth be told. I recall reading a rumour that a condition of Collingwood's vote to accept the Crows in 1990 over Port's bid was that the VFL agreed never to let Port Adel enter the VFL/AFL as the Magpies in B&W.

I reckon had Port got in in 1990 they may have got away with keeping their traditional colours.

I think it was the SA state team that wore B&W at the time.
The secretary of (the newly formed) Collingwood liked it so much he recommended
it to to the committee.

If they did, it wasn't Port Adelaide. Collingwood have worn black and white from at least 1897 when they commenced in the VFL, Port Adelaide only started wearing the black & white from 1902.

Port have worn the prison bar jumper in 2003 and 2007..

2003 was meant to be a once off, "allowed" by Collingwood, but later agreed to "allow" Port to wear it in home heritage round games, as long as they didnt play Collingwood

Port joined a league which had a team wearing B&W vertical stripes,I would have thought the decision was pretty LOGICAL and OBVIOUS   .

I'm pretty sure Wayne Jackson was the AFL CEO when Port were formed but because he has SA connections he doesn't get assassinated like Demitriou often seems to... I think we are the precious ones (SA supporters)

When the Super League was discussed it was mentioned that if the teams broke away that they would have to have new names and new colours as all those trademarks belong to the AFL.

Hence if Port Adelaide wish to be Black and White all they have to do is to apply to the AFL if they should so with to, in theory Collingwood have no say over it whatsoever.

Personally I would simply drop the Green and pick up the fourth colour chosen - Silver, what I would do is have a Port Magpies jumper with a thread of silver on the seams on the side, keeps the club black and white and technically three colours at the same time.

I still cant work out why AFL clubs are so precious about the colours they wear..
It is a joke that away/clash jumpers are not dictated by the league.

Geez, even the SAAFL clubs are big enough to let other clubs in whos colours will clash..

Because the other 16 clubs must follow the AFL rules, Collingwood make the exceptions...
