Brawling players named....

Postby Rushby Hinds » Wed Aug 02, 2006 11:40 am

From The Age website:

Collingwood players Chris Tarrant and Ben Johnson are under investigation by Victoria Police over a weekend assault that left a man unconscious.

The club has released a statement confirming the pair's involvement in "an incident in Port Melbourne early Sunday morning".

Police say the victim and four other men were leaving a venue at Station Pier between 3.30am and 4am when they saw the brawl.

The victim saw one man kicking another man who was on the ground.

He was punched from behind and knocked unconscious when he tried to separate the pair.

The man was taken to the Austin Hospital where he was treated for lacerations to his face and mouth.

The club said both players had voluntarily provided statements to police and were continuing to assist police with their inquiries.

"The club is extremely disappointed that both players were out late at night," the statement said.

AFL spokesman Patrick Keane said police had not approached the league about the incident.

South Melbourne detectives have appealed for witnesses to the brawl.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or http://www.crimestoppers.com.au

Collingwood has fined Tarrant and Johnson $5000, and both may allegedly be given their marching orders from Eddie.

I can't see the Pies sacking Tarrant however sh*thouse he may be..

Spineless tactics off the field implies they can't handle themselves in a real fight - another indication that the AFL has softened the players. Stand toe-to-toe and fight like men!!!

A real man doesn't need to fight. Remember we rule this planet because we are the smartest species not the strongest. Punch a lawyer in the face and you'll see what I mean.

Yes, Tazz & Johnno both snuck up on an unsuspecting drunk (who was asleep) & started laying into him...
Not that we should let the truth get in the wayof a good sledging session, but the late news said that Tazz ws approached by 2 men, & this was when the fight broke out.
I s'pose Tazz & Johnno should've laid down like good blokes & let a couple wombats brag how they nearly kicked 2 AFL players into a coma....

According to Mick, if your a new player and did the same thing, they would miss games, but if it's the older players, that it's allright to those things and that all clubs would do the same thing. Sorry to say this mick, but not if I was in charge of an AFL club, all players should be treated the same.

maybe that's one reason why you're not in charge of an AFL club...

Ha ha. That's what I thought when I read that. Despite my mellow line before, you wouldn't expect any bloke to cop it sweet if someone comes after you. After all, as Kenny (Rogers, not G Booney LOL) said 'sometimes you gotta fight, when you're a man'.

So that is why West Coast suspended Gardiner when Cox was injured and they had a weak inexperienced ruck division...

That is why Roos dropped Davis when he went outsie the teamrules and expected standards of behaviours...

Brisbane set their standards with repeated violitions of their team rules and behaviours by Akermanis - tell me he isn't in their best five players......

Sorry Punky Collingwood have exposed themselves as weak in this case, if it was their (Tarrant ond Johnson) first offence okay but for both of these blokes they can not claim naivity......

West Coast, Brisbane and Sydney have set standards as to what is expected of the team interms of off field and on field disciplines where as Collingwood have said "well for some individuals it is okay to be out drinking at 3:30 am when injured standing around waiting for taxi when they have a shin injury (I'll ignore the fracas) but for other well you'll get dropped...."
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

can't call Tarrant Yellow but you can call him stupid.....

But I bet Swann, Malthousse and McGuire wished Tarrant was "Look ol Yellows Leaving,"

No, West Coast suspended Gardiner because he is a repeat offender and a goose of the highest order. I don't think you can compare the Collingwood lads to this geniear5e.

That is why Roos dropped Davis when he went outsie the teamrules and expected standards of behaviours...

Can't argue with this one. Sydney are one club who appear to be on a one size fits all policy.

Brisbane set their standards with repeated violitions of their team rules and behaviours by Akermanis - tell me he isn't in their best five players......

Brisbane were very inconsistent with the way they've handled Akermanis. When they were winning, Aker was allowed to act the bunny but now all of a sudden it's a no-go area. Brisbane weren't even treating the same player consistently, let alone all players as a group consistently.

Collingwood's stance appears to be not all people are the same and as such are not all treated the same..this philosphy was also followed by Malcolm Blight but not by Tom Hafey. I would think the one rule applies to everyone would be a rather outdated concept as it does not allow for any other factors that might lead to a situation occuring. I don't think that the club has handled the issue all that badly. I think everyone is just indulging in a little Collingwood bashing..now let's all go back to abusing the Eagles instead

I think the article in todays Age succinctly states that this is not Tarrants and Johnson's to a lesser extent, first offence. I will admit on the goose scale he is not a gander like Gardiner, but he is still a goose....

My point is where there has been breaches of team disciplines and rules three clubs have shown the g 'n' d to drop "star" players when it may and has cost them "W"s

One club when presented with the same opportunity hasn't shown the same intestinal fortitude... I fear this dropping of standards may cost them in the long run especially when the coach has said their is one rule for same and another rule for others.....

Collingwood have done the right thing for mine. Tarrant & Johnson were turned on by a few drunken idiots, of course they are going to defend themselves. If you are stupid enough to pick a fight with a couple of AFL players, you deserve to end up in hospital.

All that Tarrant & Johnson did wrong was stay out until well past 3:00am, and that certainly is asking for trouble. Collingwood fined them $5000 for being out at that time of the night, which I think is fair enough.
