Do you support Mid Season Trading in the AFL?

Considering that the AFL are often regarded as being about 15 years behind the English Premier League in innovations, will we see Mid Season Trading happen in the AFL?

Various top level sports have mid season trading its hardly a new phenomena.

Where it may have some affect is that it has the potential to change outcomes for some of the sides if they get the right players, if a side is getting smashed each week in the ruck because of injury, so they trade someone for ruckman they can well turn that around whereas currently they have to accept it and hope that someone steps up to the role.

Clearly there are various advantages and probably disadvantages to be had - thoughts?

I don't know if a lot of the state league players would have the fitness required to just walk into the AFL and be competitive in a game.

trading by afl clubs with each other, yes i'd go for presuming all clubs agreed.....i'm against picking up players from other competitions though as it would be unfair to those clubs

agreed with you Mr66.

Trading YES and Drafting NO.

I think Drafting would have to much off a ripple effect, but trading would not as such.
If both parties could agree to it, why not? EG: Maric for Cornes as stated by the idiot the other week

Either way it has a massive effect.

If a Sturt player gets picked up by Brisbane, he has to go to pack his family up and move them to Brisbane (for what could be a short time). It effects Sturt, the player and his family and perhaps job prospects.

If a Carlton (rookie?) player got picked up by Brisbane, same effect (Northern Bullants are the club affected in that situation).

I think the benefit would come from a guy who might miss being drafted, plays for a local club but plays well enough to be picked up. That way they don't have to wait till next season to be looked at.

When you think about it, AFL recruiters aren't interested in short term fixes at the start of a new season, because all their players are 'fit'. They're looking for short term fixes.

Think about a guy who might have a bad knee and clubs overlook him during the Nov and pre-season drafts. If he plays well locally he has a chance to 'drafted' during the season to 'fill a spot' on a list and try and prove himself. If the next batch of young kids come through for the Nov and pre-season draft, his chances of being drafted diminish.

I think it is a great idea, wasn't there a mid-season draft a few years ago?

Why not just bring back in the mid year clearance thing, June 30th cut-off, the same as in local footy? There would have to be stipulations, ie can still only have so many on a club's list, therefore someone would either have to be culled or swapped. Salary cap would need to have room & etc.

An important factor would be that a player agrees to move clubs, but with the AFLPA winning with things like free agency, one can not see them letting any player being dudded in a deal.

No doubt there will be a mid season draft and or a mid season trade period within 5 years.

completely different. Northern Bullants are aware at the start of the year that this rookie may not be available for the whole. He is contracted to carlton and can miss bullants games because he is playing in the AFL. him moving clubs wouldnt affect it.
Drafting players would be taking the best players from state league clubs around the country that have committed to the club for the year. that player is under contract with the state league club. taking them mid season via a draft would have a far bigger effect on state league sides then trading players within the AFL.

Does anyone truly belive the AFL would care how a rule like this would affect state league clubs. :(

In their words they would be 'providing more young players around Australia the oppurtunity to play in the highest level of football possible'

But if the rule is introduced, then they'd be under the same illusion, that the player might not play for them the whole year.

Moot point.

Northern Bullies would still be affected because they might've banked on that player playing a component of the year when not required by their AFL club. This way, they lose him for the remainder of the season.

Yep I agree with this.

Mid-season trading would be great because some players that can't get a gig at their current team may be able to fill a position at a different club.

According to the Footy Show tonight, Mid Season Trading is on the table and likely to happen as early as the 2012 season.....

Look at anything the EPL are doing and rest assured the AFL will follow in their footsteps, Two Divisons and Player Loaning will be the next cabs of the rank - watch this space! 8)

Understand it may affect a state league club but it also may act as a window for a player to play at the top level? How would it work for example if there was a say 17 year old that worked his way to play senior footy in the SANFL, could a club take him in the mid year period and avoid the national draft?
