Neil Sachse had a promising football career cut short when he went head first into a contest in just his second game of VFL Football in 1975. Since then he has been in a wheelchair.

The rules makers, in rightly protecting the head have created the possiblility of this kind of accident happening again as now we are seeing players seeking contact with the head in order to draw a free kick. Now before you start bleating 'Joel Selwood Joel Selwood' I'm not talking about the shrug I'm talking about the out and out duck..almost a headbut to a players legs as they know they'll get the free.

The free kick should be only if the tackling player has initated contact and should never be awarded to the bloke who ducks right in seeking contact. Tough to call perhaps but we can't afford any Neil Sachses NOT running around.

LISTEN TO THIS MAN.

Massive problem.

Instead of protecting themselves they seek out the contact... idiots.

The rule should be overhauled to stop penalising the tackling player who ISN'T initiating contact.

The other dangerous trend is players sliding in where the opposition is standing or crouching. We're seeing more and more players get bowled over or legs taken out, or worse, caught underneath. Refer Jaymie Graham in the WAFL last week....

Should it go further, in the attempt to eradicate the dangerous tactic, and penalise to bloke who's making the head first contact?

I guess this was always going to happen with the increased speed in the game further increasing the potential for injury, but it's really changed the fabric of the game.

For the 30 years I can recall following or playing footy, it's always been a demand to a player to keep/get your head over the ball, but simply with the concussions and potential for Sachse like injuries, that can't continue as it has for so long.

Agreed, and if you got whacked high you should get a free. If you duck into it you got bugger all. Which is how it should be.

Yes, but the problem is that yeah a bloke shouldn't get a free for sliding head first into an opponent, but that doesn't help him when he's a paraplegic

Spot on, REB. One free kick is not worth spending your life in a wheelchair

Good point, but how the hell do you expect umpires to adjuticate who has initiated the contact when they all too often get the simplest of rule interpretations wrong?

I totally agree with what you are saying, but all head high contact, IMO, should be rewarded with a free kick.

So how do we stop this? Educate the players.

If you have bent right down to collect the ball and on the way up get hit high, its a free kick, everyday of the week. If you have bent right down to pick the ball up and on the way up, for just a moment hold this position and get hit high it must still be a free kick but we dont want to see this.

Impossible to irradicate IMO.

Logan.

Logan is your classic ducker. So is Matt Thomas.
Back on Logan though, I've never seen a bloke get knocked out or belted around as much as him since freakin "Kamikaze" David Teague.
The guy continually puts himself in the wrong position and in turn, gets knocked out AND doesn't win a free kick.

Ok I personally think people need to understand that the reason the afl would look at changing the rule is due chance of serious injury so i don't think they can let a high bump go even if he has ducked or slid into it, maybe if he does this intentionally go for a ball up and if that doesn't stop then free kick to opposition, the only thing is it will make the game softer but to take out serious neck/shoulder/back injurys it is worth it.
