The latest AFL stat

have noticed that they have "metres gained" as a statistic for each team now, what the f*** for? keep any gridiron crap out of our game, i will stand corrected if someone can point out some relevance for this seemingly pointless and useless piece of info.

Meters gained divided by disposals will tell you a fair bit about a team I think.

Its a great stat, will allow for you to figure out what teams use the ball going forward efficiently as opposed to those that might get a load of touches but don't necessarily go anywhere with it.

what aload of carp, the most important stat is goals, points and the total. and at the end of the game if you total is higher than you opponent you win, simple as that.

I'd love to see this stat used in games of the past (if it's possible). The term "going nowhere fast" has been used to describe football of late, so I would like to know how the game of today compares with games from 10, 20 or 30 years ago.

I dont mind the stat, hopefully it shows who the true moochers are. Remember a couple if years back when rutten and bock got 45 touches each because they kept handballing and chipping back to each other in the last qtr. These stats would show them as having gained 80metres or an average of 2 metres per stat. The stat definately helps when picking BOG's, get sick of people saying "oh so and so got 40 touches and didnt get in best" yeah thats because his touches went nowhere.

Then dont look at the stats sheet in the paper at the end of the round. To find out info like this you need go looking for it, its not as if its being thrust upon you and is unadvoidable. As i have said earlier in the thread, i think a stat like this is useful to see which players use to play and gain territory well as opposed to those who rack up cheap possies and do nothing with it.

Interesting stat requested by Paul Roos and shown On The Couch last night verifying what many of us have long believed .. The number of free kicks lessen over the course of a game.

Ie, Quarter 1 sees the highest amount paid, less in quarter 2, less again in the 3rd and the least in the 4th.

Why don't the umps let the game go as much earlier as they do when the result is closer to being known?

Umpires don't want to be responsible for a team winning/losing a game. Pretty simple really.

Could it be the intesity of games generally drops off.

Also players could be a tad more careful not wanting to give away the free kick that costs his side the game.

I have seen it on official champion data stats, maybe all papers dont print the full spreadsheet due to space restrictions. to get a team metres gained they would have to take individual metres gained one would have thought.

not if their inconsistent from one quarter to the next. a free kick should be a free kick weather its the first minute or last minute of a game. to often this is not the case.
