I thought the last paragraph will cause a stir in Adelaide !!!!
AFL plans even draw
AFL clubs will have far less scope to complain about an unfair draw next season with the league planning to base the return meetings between clubs on this year's final home and away ladder, rather than on the round 15 ladder as they have done in past years.
The AFL is in the early stages of preparing next year's fixture, which will see several changes from the fixture of recent years due to the new television agreement with Channels Seven and Ten.
The major one will be the addition of a Sunday twilight game every week with these matches to be shared between Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, as opposed to the current fixture where the only such matches are staged in Perth - beginning at 2.40pm Perth time and 4.40pm in the eastern states.
But next year there will be games played in both Adelaide and Melbourne starting later than 4pm on a Sunday with these games likely to be shown on pay television.

If it invovles an Adelaide side, it will be either shown live or on delay.

From an attendance point of view I'd much rather the Sunday games were at 4pm than the 12:40 timeslots they currently occur at!

Too right connie... Wastes the entire day when they play at 12.40, at least at 4pm you get to spend most of the day doing something other than attend a footy match!

We will actually start to get a full house at Footy Park with this - 37000 against the Hawks and 47000 againt the Kangaroos is not good enough in my books !!!

With 16 teams and 22 rounds and blockbuster games and selling of home games the AFL will never have a fair draw!

Back to 14 teams (merge 4 Vic clubs) with 26 rounds, no pre-season Tupperware cup. Every one plays each other twice, one home, one away- although Essendon & Collingwood will need help finding the airport

Here is how to have an even draw:
Based on the current AFL ladder...
Barrie Robran Conference (odd teams)
Adelaide
Melbourne
St Kilda
Sydney
Geelong
Brisbane Lions
Kangaroos
Carlton
Ron Barrassi Conference (even teams)
West Coast
Collingwood
Western Bulldogs
Fremantle
Richmond
Port Adelaide
Hawthorn
Essendon
Fixture:
Rounds 1 - 7 against the other 7 teams in your conference
Rounds 8 - 15 against the 8 teams from the other conference (4h, 4a)
Rounds 16 - 22 reverse fixtures against the other 7 teams in your conference
Finals:
Week 1 (Qualifying and Elimination Finals)
Barrie Robran Conference
G1: 1st vs 2nd (winner through to conference final)
G2: 3rd vs 4th (loser eliminated)
Ron Barrassi Conference
G3: 1st vs 2nd (winner through to conference final)
G4: 3rd vs 4th (loser eliminated)
Week 2 (Preliminary Finals)
Barrie Robran Conference
G5: Loser of G1 vs Winner of G2 (loser eliminated, winner to conference final)
Ron Barrassi Conference
G6: Loser of G3 vs Winner of G4 (loser eliminated, winner to conference final)
Week 3 (Conference Finals)
G7: Winner G1 vs Winner G5 for Barrie Robran Trophy
G8: Winner G3 vs Winner G6 for Ron Barrassi Trophy
Week 4 (Grand Final)
G9: Winner G7 vs Winner G8

Not a fan of conferences or US style formats. I suggest the top 8 (from the previous year) play each other twice during the season with the bottom 8 doing likewise as well as playing each other team once. That nicely makes 22 minor rounds. However teams might be tempted to finish 9th rather than 8th in order to get the easy draw the following season so the AFL should reward teams that make the top 8 with some decent financial rewards. I believe MCG Anzac Day matches should be between the two highest ranked Vic teams from the prev season. And Round 1 should always be the prev year's Grand Finalists playing each other in the reigning premiers home state unfurling the flag etc...Perhaps Rd 1 should be 1v2 3v4 5v6 etc..

Barrie Robran conference..now it's my sides that are aching. The guy was a great..who NEVER played VFL football. Why would they name a 'conference' over him. Drink more coffee before you post.

I shouldn't have named the conferences. Should have guessed it would distract some people from the actual substance of the post.
The point of the conferences is that every other team has exactly the same teams to play against (each other twice and other conference once) to get through to the finals and then GF. The only other way I can see an even draw take place is if there are 30 rounds in the season.

The fixtures (please stop calling it a "Draw") will NEVER be equal.
BUT - I don't think it changes results more than 5% over the year.
The good teams will always rise to the top, the poor teams will always lose and hang in the cellar.
Mid range teams are probably more affected - but still not much.
As long as it's "fair enough" I don't care. Teams will always have a good situation in the year, and a bad one. A dream start to a years fixtures means a bad home stretch, and vice versa. Some teams might travel to three states in three weeks - well, all the power to them as come finals time, it will be in their benefit.

Ariel. Your conferences
have no fargen substance and the idea is as original as half the theme songs in the SANFL. Hate that roll eyes icon nearly as much as bull5hit American terminology creeping into our game
Punkybrooster. I would
never bag the great man but naming a conference after a quarterback who never got to the big dance and went the whole nine yards yadda yadda talk to the hand you go girl etc etc...please put the lid back on your gas can.
GWW. Bastard!!

That was a low blow!

Every time I hear this idea, I think, doesn't every team play 7 teams twice and 8 teams once, anyway?

As long as no Satur
day fixtures are planned in SA, I'm happy.

Is this a too sensible formula for a fair AFL draw?
Teams that finish two spaces apart play each other twice.
IE, even numbered teams play each twice as do odd numbered teams.
This would ensure that clubs would play an even spread of top and bottom teams.
If this meant only 1 Coll/Ess, WC/Fremantle,Adelaide/Port game a year, then tough.
I thinks this sounds sensible and fair and I know its got no hope at the
AFL commission.
