On the Couch Mon 24/7

Did anyone catch this Mondays edition of on the couch?? Matty Lloyd made a very interesting comment on the Adelaide Essendon Game. After the game he was amazed to hear the Essendon players say that at the 20 min of the last quarter when Adelaide are 20 goals up, Rucuttio has "gone off" at the forwards for losing thier structure, being lazy and not doing the team discipline things they talk about. He said the Essendon players couldn't get over how disciplined they were especially when it came to their precision passing "bullet like" as opposed to the "harbour bridge" passes Essendon were doing that night. Lloyd reckons he couldn't sleep that night thinking of the differences between Essendon and the Crows and had to write everything down on the personal and team standards the Crows demanded of themselves and each other....

As a crows supporter I am heartened to hear that there is such a high level of internal motivation amongst the playing group to demand perfection from each other no matter what the situation and to not let their own standards drop.

That to me is a hallmark of all great successful sporting teams that the motivation comes from within the group through their common belief in the team goals and values.

That makes me more confident (not certain) that the ultimate prize is not too far away from the Crows if they are prepared to maintain those high personal and team standards throughout the remaining weeks of the season.

Yes, Wrinkles I watched that show and I can't say I was surprised to hear's Lloyd's comments. I'd expect any strong team that is playing consistent football to display such values. This Crows unit reminds me a lot of the 1994 Eagles combination. Seemingly interchangeable, plenty of depth, toughness and skill. The flag is not 'in the bag' by any means but someone is going to have to play out of their skins to beat them.

I was actually pretty impressed with Matthew Lloyd. He seems to be an outstanding leader, the kind we need down at Catland. Professional and focused..he went up in my estimation after seeing that interview. I still can't stand his diving on the field...as I've said many times..he's too good a player to do that.

Didn't see it - maybe they will replay it.
But I heard sometime in the last few months that John Barnes said he heard various codes and signals on the field that he'd never heard before. He said it was unbeleivable what was being passed via word of mouth from player to player.

That Eagles 1994 unit was just awesome, the Carlton of 1995 were good as well!

Lloyd does surprise me in the way he seems very strong and comanding in the way he leads.

a few clubs have stated publically in recent weeks how much the crows talk and push each other during the games, I know a couple of Cats officials who stated that the Cats players were blown away by how much the crows players drive each other, especially when they do not have the footy

this is a sign of a unselfish side who wants to work for each other

Totally agree Brad (I'm assuming you are taking about his captaincy not his leads on the ground  ) I was surprised at how open an honest he was on Monday night, especially with his comments about some of his teammates and his captains sessions he has called due to lack of off field discipline. Essendon are on the right track if they have him as captain.

Back to the Crows again, my brother's "trouble and strife" is one of the marketing staff at Adelaide and so he has been in the rooms before the game a couple of times and has commented on how disciplined the crows are even in the warm up, Schwerdt has total control and just one word gets them to change activity in the warm up, no explaining required. The other thing was no swearing what-so-ever, no artificial geeing up required (e.g. F***en smash em boys) just key phrases and words repeated over and over again to get the player switiched on to the key tasks required for the next 2 hours + .....

Like any new model there is always a few bugs, but when the series II or next update is released with some extra options, watch 'em go.

To all the posters on this thread, this advice!
Find out what these words mean when put into a particular phrase;
'Chickens, eggs, hatched, counting'.

Mr 66, what part of this statement don't you understand??

At no stage has anyone on this thread started counting anything with respect to Adelaide winning let alone making the GF. GF's are not won in July.....Crows supporters know better than most given our experiences of 1998 proved that the best side in the competition came 2nd.

What is common amongst the posters are the citing of examples of a commitment to excellence and intrinsic motivation that Adelaide have exhibited this year and highlighted by a member of the 2nd best team in AFL history (Essendon 2000) which is common to all successful sporting teams.

Yes Tassies comes across a lot better than on the field, where at times he seems 'untouchable' by umpires, but saying that I've seen him twice now at Telsra Dome and hes kicked 10 each time and won the Bombers the game. I guess hes 'the player you love to hate' from the opposition.

The Crows are as much of a shoe in as any team in the past 20 years to win the premiership IMO. Saw an article the other day that mentioned this Crows side has a better record than Essendon of 2000 and Carlton of 1995 and those sides were never not going to win the premiership in those years. If the Crows don't win the premiership this year there will be a big annoying talking monkey knocking on Neil Craig's office door come October that will climb up on to his shoulders and not leave him alone until he wins a premiership.

Comparing previous teams is always wraught with danger, but until the Brisbane Lions came along I think that Carlton side of 95' was IMHO the best I'd ever seen (Used to hate Carlton too btw)

Until Brisbane Lions circa 2001-2003 team I think the best team was Essendon in 2000. Carlton 1995 was good, but these guys were better, hardly a weakness anywhere.

Gee Aerie, you've made my last post look hypocritical.

the moment we start thinking we are shoe-ins we are guaranteed to lose....
