Herald Sun chief football writer, Mike Sheahan, has released his annual list of his Top 50 players.
I have to be completely honest, the number one selection has really surprised me a lot, and the omission of a couple from past years more so. No Sam Mitchell? For what its worth, Cyril Rioli, Jarrad Waite and Shane Mumford look miles too high to me also and Travis Boak too low.
No Adelaide players, one Port Adelaide player.

Top 50, but 60 names?
Without reading the article, I'm guessing this is where they he expects them to be ranked at the end of the year?

I think after Dale thomas' year last year he is about right. His two grand finals were superb.

He listed the top names, and then the next 10 best - to save confusion, I added their notional rankings in there.

Ah cheers mate. Sounds good. These things always aimed to get people talking, hence the Franklin position I believe

Not even sure he is the best player at Hawthorn, much less the AFL, but I see what you are saying.

I would definatley have Stevie Johnson and Leigh Montagna before him.
I dont get the "man love" people have for Deledio...over rated I think

I personally wouldnt have johnson ahead of Thomas, but montagna, I would.
And deledio, well as a Richmond supporter I think he is elite. Elite user of the ball, ability to move up the ground in the middle and up forward to kick a couple quick goals.

Best and fairest winner booney.
Kieran jack should be higher IMO
Dom Cassisi could be in there. Severly underrated IMO

Scarlett and Johnson both too high based on last year's output - Kelly too low. What does he have to do get rated.
Rioli better than Didak, Hayes and Montagna? Dear oh dear.

Shaun Higgins at 30? Ryan Griffen in the top 50? Both overrated as buggery.

Yep, indeed, my mistake. Should really be able to recall one Swallow from another..

Agree with you REB. Scarlett definitely too high.
I watched Kelly pretty closely last year (had him in my supercoach side), and he was bloody important to the cats last year. That's a suprise to me actually, why is Hayes so low?

People have been overrating the Dogs for decades
Libratore
Wynd
Grant
West
Johnson
Griffen
and now Higgins who can't even stay on the park.
There's a reason why this mob don't flags.

Judd
Ablett
Goddard
Selwood
Hodge for my top 5. Gets fairly ambiguous after that.

As far as blokes in SA based teams go, not many had great seasons last year.
But i'd probably select Cassisi in a side before alot of those guys. But he's obviously not a blindingly brilliant stand out player.
Someone who is though, who gets left off these sorts of lists is Graham Johncock. Ive seen him pants several of those blokes, he just needs to be on the park for a full season.
If Richie Douglas puts in another improved season like the last he will be right up there.
...but then again who really cares what some vicco journo thinks.

Goddard number 1 for mine.
Too high:
Franklin
Rioli
Scarlett
Griffen
Higgins
Too low:
Kelly (should at least be in the top 50)
Boak
Hayes (top 10 for mine)
Montagna
Gibbs (should at least be in the 50)
