Brisbane Lions Season 2011

Postby hearts on fire » Sun Feb 06, 2011 7:01 pm

After a big preseason off field for various reasons with Fev, i wonder how the Lions will respond on the field...

Will be an interesting year with the Gold Coast starting up there and what impact they will have on the Lions, only time will tell.

10-12 finish for me, will be another up and down season i think!!

All 2011 talk on the Lions here!

FROM AFL SITE:

The Brisbane Lions begin their 2011 campaign with a home game against Fremantle at the Gabba. They again have an Easter Thursday night home game, this time against St Kilda.

Two weeks later, in round seven, local pride will be on the line when the Lions take on Gold Coast for the first time. The clash, in which former Lions Jared Brennan and Michael Rischitelli are likely to run out for the Suns, has been scheduled to take place on a Saturday night at the Gabba and will be telecast by Fox Sports.

The two Queensland teams will meet again at the Gabba in round 21.

The Lions have six games in Melbourne, so their Victorian-based members get plenty of chances to see their team in action.

Really difficult to see a finish above tenth. Too much will still be left to Black and Brown, but expect Redden to really step up to try and take some of the slack in the midfield. The other wildcard is Aaron Cornelius. If Fevola doesn't front, or only plays part of the season, expect Cornelius to really seize the chance up forward.

One of their biggest issues is pace - they look really slow overall.

I'm predicting 8th. Could finish as low as 15th though.
Got a lot of young guys who will be better for games under their belt this year like Rockliff, Cornelius, Redden, Banfield and Harwood.
Then the young guys coming through like Polec and Beams putting pressure on.
I also expect a big year from Rich and Leuenberger.
Plus having the likes of Drummond fit will be more than handy. He set up most of our play from defence last year before getting injured.
How Brown's body handles getting double teamed again without Fev there will be an issue, while Black is no spring chicken either.

Brisbane may well be the lowest Queensland based team on the ladder at the end of the year. 5 wins at tops and bottom 4 is theirs for the having.

You should be sworn at more often, BG.

FWIW, I think Brisbane will finish 13th.

Right above Port.... ;)

I think Brisbane will finish right below Geelong, Collingwood, St Kilda, Sydney, Port, North, Adelaide, Carlton, Essendon, Western Bulldogs and Hawthorn.

Did anyone watch the game last night? How did Jared Polec go? It said in the paper he was named best for the Lions.

I've watched every game the Lions have played this season and despite them being winless after 4 I reckon they are in a better spot than this time last year when they went unbeaten after four.

Except for one match this year the Lions have been competitive in every game this season. Against Freo they nearly got over the Lion despite losing Staker and Brown. The very last minor round match you would want to lose troops in the duration of the battle would be round one as you aren't match fit yet. Freo have proven themselves to be a pretty good side since then and the Lions were dead stiff.

Against Melbourne and St Kilda victory escaped their clutches due to poor execution and a lack of experience. The Lions should have had a leg up last night as it was pure Qld conditions but it was the more experienced Saints who executed their skills more effiecently.

This team has heart and once Vossy culls the less able players such as guys like Raines (LOL) they might get somewhere. Luenberger is going to be a top ruck prospect even though some of his kicking last night was Blakelike. Redden, Polec, Rich and Rockliff will form the nucleus of an outstanding midfield in the seasons to come. Very impressed by Redden in particular and Polec, despite his slender frame goes in hard. Strangely enough I reckon Simon Black was one of the worst offenders with poor execution - perhaps the Lions' Rolls Royce doesn't appreciate being put in the Garage for a week.

The Lions have a favourable run of matches coming up in the nex couple of weeks and by Round nine they'll have Jonathon Brown and Josh Drummond back to add a touch of class. Adcock in the meantime is leading the side well to ensure there is no temporary leadership vacuum. He has grown in stature and flew the flag for a younger team mate last night.

So while there is plenty of gloom and doom about the Lions I reckon they will face season 2012 with a postitive outlook, as I reckon this season my be gone by the time JB comes back. As for the Saints..well, they were shocking and if they played a side that could hang on to a mark they would have been well beaten. This win and next week's win over what is left of the Cows will merely wallpaper over some sizeable cracks.

Will Voss be able to hang around long enough to reap the rewards of a potential first class midfield in the years to come.

Mitch Clark was good last night too.

I reckon he might Sleepy. He is much loved up here and if they can cobble up a few wins and have a half decent season people will see the club is heading in the right direction.

Went pretty well, but needs a big* summer in the gym to compete against stronger opposition who easily brushed him aside last night.

Agree with REB about Black, it wasn't his finest match.
Like Voss before him, Black's performances are in a gradual decline as he heads towards the end of his career.
Luke Power is similarly fading away.

Voss would be pleased with the endeavour they played with, but as per the last few years, the Lions were let down at crucial moments by poor decision making and lacklustre skills.
