AFL finalising $1 billion broadcasting deal

The Australian Football League (AFL) could be just weeks away from its goal of acquiring $1 billion for the next broadcast rights deal.
The current deal with the Seven Network, Ten Network and Fox Sports expires at the end of the 2011 season.
With new teams Gold Coast Suns and Greater Western Sydney Giants joining the expanded competition from 2012, the AFL looks set to reap the benefits with Seven, Nine, Ten and Fox Sports all likely to carve a slice of the broadcast pie.
3AW reported this morning that Fox Sports looks to be the big winner, with five matches per week. The subscription television broadcaster is set to win three matches on Saturday and two on Sundays. Fox Sports currently pays around $50 million a year for four matches per week.
Despite wanting all games to be broadcast around the country live, the AFL is likely to hand Seven the main Friday evening game. Seven is on the record as being against moving their top-rated Better Homes and Gardens from the 7:30pm timeslot.
The biggest loser appears to be Ten and its high-definition offshoot One. According to Caroline Wilson, Ten will only broadcast one game per round on Saturday evening.
Nine, eager to be back in the AFL states, is hoping to introduce Monday Night Football as a marquee event, similar to Fox Sports with its National Rugby League (NRL) Monday evening broadcast.
All free-to-air networks would be allowed to broadcast their games into non-AFL markets, including Sydney and Brisbane, using their digital multichannels such as 7mate, GO! or GEM.
The league's internet rights are also being sold, edging the full package towards the magical $1b mark.
"They're certainly going to get a healthy increase," one station boss told the Herald Sun yesterday.

So from next year it would seem:
Friday night game: Channel 7
Early Saturday afternoon game: Fox Sports
Late Saturday afternoon game: Fox Sports
Saturday night game: Channel Ten
Saturday night game: Fox Sports
Early Sunday afternoon game: Fox Sports
Sunday afternoon game: Channel 7
Late Sunday afternoon game: Fox Sports
Monday night game: Channel 9

Love it if that's how it happens. Bit surprised TEN would lose a Saturday afternoon game to FOX though.

Ditto. I have Foxtel so it doesn't worry me too much, but I'm not sure they should have more than 50% of games on pay-TV. Not sure Ten would want to give Saturday afternoons up either.

So does that mean the end of live free-to-air Crows and Power away games on Saturday arvo?

Nope, Ch 10 would take the Fox feed, as done in previous years. All Port and Crow away games must be broadcast FTA back into Adelaide.

Sunday's will be thin again without PPV. It's the one day I've always liked to kick back and watch footy all day.

The sooner they piss off FTA the better. **** Better Homes and Gardens and matches that start at 11pm.

Great. I don't support either of them but always enjoy watching them play.

There is a chance that that the new deal will have some Crows and Port Games not on Free to air at all

If AFL goes this way with most of it on Foxtel I think I'll just stop bothering to follow it.
I refuse to be forced to by a lot of puerile muck I don't want from Foxtel, just so I can get football.

I have Foxtel so I am not fussed but would be sad to see Channel 10 and FTA lose Saturday afternoons, how 7 can get away with Better Homes instead of the footy is rubbish....

Me too. There's always the radio though - I reckon ABC Grandstand coverage is first rate.

LOL. Not much of a footy fan then. I pay for Football so I don't have to watch a lot of puerile muck that is FTA.

If the AFL are fair dinkum then this:
Seven is on the record as being against moving their top-rated Better Homes and Gardens from the 7:30pm timeslot.
Shouldn't be allowed to occur.
If the AFL let this slide through, then everyone should boycott BH&G and FNF because it's the only way to affect ratings and thereby make them switch.

puerile muck? Don't Fox and Ch7 & 10 switch games anyway? I can understand it if you meant they were jamming in adverts ad nauseum after each goal, but otherwise the coverage is comparable.

Why cant channel 7 just put the footy or better homes and garden on 1 of the other channels they now have? Doesnt seem that hard to me.
