Sitting through a game of AFL

I am in the process of doing so and I am getting that feeling of frustration and disappointment of yet another game of what is supposed to be the best standard of Aussie Rules in the world being ruined by ugly tactics.

Sure I can hear people say 'if you don't like it, don't watch it' but I wouldn't mind seeing Roo play his 300th game. But gee whiz, why on earth do people rate the AFL so highly over the SANFL is baffling at times.

The Cows are so much better than everyone else at the minute, teams need to do that possession style not to get completely blown out of the water. Other games are better to watch.

Teams that don't get blown out of the water don't learn much from the game at all.

My theory is that for the vast majority of us we only see SANFL footy "live" at the ground where we can see everything that is happening, forward and defensive line set ups, who is doing what, off the ball stuff, crowd reactions, banter, beers with blokes you know etc. Where as most of watch AFL on TV where you watch what a director in and OB van wants you to watch and you don't get to see everything, and you watch it with "her indoors" who would rather watch teh movie on the other channel .

For example I got to see last weeks game in Melbourne on Fri night which while still not a great game of footy it was enjoyable to be there with blokes I knew, a few beers and got to see the whole ground and appreciated the tactics involved. If I was home watching it I would have turned it over halfway through teh 1st half and listened to partyMAX while posting inane thoughts on this site .......

It is the live factor of SANFL footy that makes it great compared to the sterile environment of AFL in the lounge room....

That is one thing where SANFL rules over the AFL indefinitely - the live match. I've long thought the SANFL match you see on TV does no justice to the actual game being played. It appears faster when you see it live; hardly any difference to the AFL; you can get closer to the match; better atmosphere when a fair sized crowd is there and is far greater value.

Yep Tassie I agree, I find that a game of footy is more enjoyable to watch live at the ground rather than on the box as you say i see watch what I want to see ie match ups, structures etc. its even better watching SANFL footy as you can get closer to action and appreciate the game more (and less people ) as Robin Williams puts in his Live on Broadway DVD the AFL (NFL in his case) has too much 'Commerical time' and dont the f**kwits in Dermie, Commeti et al, know it with some of the shite the feed us on the telly.

Went to the game Friday night and it was interesting wacthing the crows tactics across the full ground. Now everyone was having a go at Laidley for his chipping tactics but who made them do this???? CROWS! they had their whole 18 players in the Roos forward 50 everytime...Dont blame the Roos blame the Crows, if they opened up the game it would have been more appealing

After going to the Crows game with Ian on Friday night and then the Parade on Saturday with my lad & his mate , even with the Doggies loosing I enjoyed the SANFL more. AAMI seemed pretty quiet (Ian commented that last years GF was noisier) and there was no comments, just some morons showing how little they actually know. Or maybe it was just the fact I could stand in the sun whilst enjoying a Coopers & WATCHING THE GAME

Seriously TV distorts many sporting events and action is always "slower" on TV than it actually is live at the game. You also lose that atmosphere of being at a live game when watching on TV which heightens the experience in the main.

Motor racing is classic example of TV distorting or slowing down cars. You get a real idea when you are live at a motor racing event just how fast they actually go.

SANFL Football is certainly much better live than on TV as is the AFL. At least at the game you don't just see a portion of play as it happens you get to anticpate and watch the next (or hopefully) the next play phase unfold.

Exactly right. Although this style is winning games I think the coaches have a responsibility to encourage an attacking brand of football and the AFL rules committee have a responsibility to preserve what is great about our game. I think almost all SANFL coaches encourage attacking football which makes it great to watch and I am glad the rules, or the way the umpires interpret them most of the time, have not gone the way of the AFL.

I went to the Crows/Kangaroos game on Friday night. Best thing about it was the fireworks.

If 48,000 people were there to watch the Eagles/Central game a fortnight ago or the Port/Eagles game a week ago and the media coverage was the same and each game had fireworks and all were neutral supporters and you asked did they prefer the SANFL game or the AFL game, I would be surprised if 40,000 didn't say they prefered the SANFL game.

The truth is that going to watch the Crows is not so much about the football as it is about the event, hype and atmosphere. I think I'll stick to watching the Crows on tv for the rest of the season. I can at least drift off to sleep during the boring bits.
