Total shock to read of this, he was near on my favourite player when I was knee high to a grasshopper .. Have always thought of Maurice when discussing players of sheer skill, he was absolutely magnificent.

It wasn't a crack at my fellow posters, more like an indication of what is considered more important by the media about the game ever since Wayne Carey porked Kelli Stevens in Archer's dunny.

I'm too young to even know who this guy played for (without reading other posts or googling), but no-one who follows football in the current day and age can not be aware of the large impact of the Rioli family over a long period of time.

And REB, me being 40, I remember Rioli as silky smooth, but even my memories of him are distant. Given most of our posters wouldn't have seen much of him I can understand the minimalistic response. Also, I tend not to post on RIP's as I feel it's pure tokenism.

i disagree, the man entertained us (those old enough to remember) & from my pov it is a mark of respect to him & any other person & it is no different to any actor, actress or musician that have passed away that have entertained us, almost everyone knows 'where they were' when elvis, marilyn monroe, jfk, john lennon, michael jackson, dame joan sutherlund etc etc passed away & you do feel for them & their families etc etc...so to me it wasn't a token gesture it was respect to a man that entertained me sometimes live but most times on 'the winners'

Yeh, and that's fine Bayman. I just consider it tokenism in that I don't the guy/gal (person departed). Yes they might've impacted my life for a period of time, but they're not close enough to me to want to bid them adieu or go to their funeral per se. That's my POV, but I certainly respect those who have a differing POV like yourself.

Think the cases you've both presented just show that either stance is fine as it's a personal thing .. I like the discussions more for the opportunity to discuss the wares a bloke might have shown whilst performing his craft - I guess though we should be able to take the opportunities to hold those same discussions before that person leaves us.
