Chris McDermott/Graham Cornes

Talk on the national game

Chris McDermott/Graham Cornes

Postby ORDoubleBlues » Tue Jul 18, 2006 6:42 pm

Could someone please confirm or deny that on radio on Sunday that Chris McDermott is alleged to have said that "Graham Cornes was wrong in asserting that the older players at the club (Crows at the end of '94) were a hindrance to any further short term success"
If he did, that is more absolute f****n garbage from McDermott.
Cornes was right in wanting to get rid of certain players who were already past their prime when the Crows first came in but unfortunately a very unprofessional AFC (at the time) sided with the players and Cornes was booted.
I noted that the club didn't make the same mistake when Malcolm Blight was appointed two years later and did exactly the same thing that Cornes wanted to do i.e. get rid of the players who were past it.

I thought it was the best thing that Blight could do at the end of 1996 was get rid of McGuiness, Mcdermott and Jarman. Each had been great players during their prime but we definately past it and all they were managing to do was hold the club back.

Every footy club has been better off for getting rid of McDermott.

Assume you mean for what happened in '96 (In fairness to McDermott, he did actually retire before Blight's cleanout). Cornes should have been allowed to do it in '94.

We may have got the Motlops, but what about the players he let go during his time? Damien Squire springs to mind!

I do like your posts Tassie and you're probably being tongue in cheek but despite Hart's shortcomings, he took over at a time that was equivalent to taking over the Titanic when the deck was 400m below sea level.
