Magpies to wear clash strip against Kangaroos

COLLINGWOOD will break from tradition from 2011 and wear a clash strip for matches against North Melbourne.
The Magpies will wear the new jumper from next season, with the reigning premier to unveil the clash jumper against the Kangas at Etihad Stadium in round two.
Collingwood intends to wear the jumper each time it plays North Melbourne and is the away team.
While the jumper retains the club's famous black and white stripes, it has a larger black base on the front.
Collingwood club president Eddie McGuire has vowed never to stray from the club's black and white stripes.
However Pies chief executive Gary Pert says the club is happy with the outcome.
"While we will never move away from the traditional combination of black and white stripes, the new jumper that we have designed along with the AFL and Adidas is a good solution," Pert said.

I felt the same way MP, but when I actually saw the design I thought
that it was acceptable.

I agree - I didn't think he had it in him!

In my mind it makes up for the quasi(7/11)-relocation attempt to Tasmania.

??????

All they have done is remove the central white stripe from the jumper - still - it is enough, as is their white jumper with the black stripes.

I reckon it will be their current alternate strip (ie, their old one!) with less or thinner black stripes

Given their historical resistance to this concept, they are lucky they have white in the guernsey and can comply with the clash requirement without compromising their in principle stand.

Essendon however are stuck unless they have a big change of heart. Not much you can do with their guernsey unless they are prepared to do what WCE, Adelaide and Hawthorn do.

That's the opposite to my prediction

I forgot it was specificially for the game v North Melbourne. They can't use their white strip of course

It's worth noting that NM still have to wear their white shorts!

It's the NM away game so they would be wearing white shorts regardless. They are wearing their hooped socks too apparently.

Perfectly logical the way I see it.

Once upon a time it was assumed football players were quick minded enough to be able to tell their opponents from their team mates simply by one lot wearing white shorts and one lot dark ones.
Sure, the game is faster, but the eye is capable of making that discrimination very fast.
So is there any need for clash outfits except for marketing?
Are the players really much slower thinking and reacting theses days??

No, it's a NM home game

That's the point. That's what the fuss is about otherwise NM would have to adjust for Collingwood's preferred strip

Aahhh, my apologies.

Simiilar thing happened back in the early 2000s - the AFL was directing which clubs had to wear what strip, supposedly for television.

I remember one Power v Hawks game at Footy Park, Port wore white shorts and Hawthorn brown - had me buggered.

But in this case I can still see it being more beneficial for North to wear white. It does cause a bigger contrast to the more basically black of Collingwood. Less white on Collingwood and more on North - does make sense.

I agree it makes sense for NM to wear white shorts. I just like the irony that despite the apparent "win" by NM and Collingwood's apparent compromise, Collingwood are wearning very close to their normal strip and NM still have to wear white shorts which traditionally was what an away team wore.

NM suffer like Geelong do in that they have a mostly white guernsey so they both get stuck in the matching white shorts to avoid clashes even when they are the home team.

True - but I read an article recently where Geelong stated they prefer to wear their white shorts.
