The first month is 3 games @ AAMI + a bye. Pretty happy with that though!

Like the bye in Rd 16 as well. A good time for a break before the run into finals.

Adelaide nows thoughts on the two SA teams draws

FIRST the good news from the AFL fixture released this morning - the recharged Crows have been handed the best cards to re-establish themselves as AFL finalists in September.
For the first 19 weeks of the 24-week home-and-away season, Adelaide is either at home at AAMI Stadium or in Melbourne. Such a routine will delight Crows coach Neil Craig who can get his players into a comfortable cycle from the moment they open the premiership season on Saturday March 26.

That game will be against Hawthorn at AAMI Stadium in a revisit to the 1991 game that started Adelaide's AFL adventure.

Now the bad news. AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou's promise of better timeslots and better match-ups to end the exit of fans from AAMI Stadium has not been fulfilled.

The league says it tried, but ultimately the challenge of fitting in the new Gold Coast Suns to the fixture (and television schedule) made it too difficult to deliver more Saturday night football to South Australia.

Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar.
.End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.
How the draw looks for the SA-based clubs:

CROWS

IT is a great football draw for Adelaide.

In the first 19 weeks of the 24-round home-and-away season, the Crows are either at home or in Melbourne. Adelaide traditionally asks for six games in Victoria - it has seven.

Adelaide will travel to just three states (Victoria, Western Australia and Queensland) - and, strangely, again has no game in Sydney. It is hardly taxing.

The double-up games are not too taxing either - just two top-eight teams from last year (St Kilda and Geelong) and, as a blessing, two games against new franchise Gold Coast.

Commercially, the fixture is not quite what the Crows would have wanted as they face the challenge of boosting their membership and ending the fall in attendances at AAMI Stadium.

There are three Saturday afternoon games (an unpopular time slot) at West Lakes - and they are against Fremantle, Gold Coast and West Coast. Hardly big drawcards.

Adelaide hosts a Sunday twilight Showdown against Port Adelaide.

And at least eight of the Crows' 11 home games will have live telecasts against the gate.

POWER

MATTHEW Primus has a challenging start to his "new era" as Port Adelaide coach.

The draw has thrown up AFL premier Collingwood and Geelong in his first two away games - in rounds one and three. It will be some task to generate momentum from the start.

The real test for the Power comes in the middle of the draw.

From rounds seven to 17 the travel schedule is demanding - home, Sydney, home, Darwin, home, Perth, home, Brisbane, home and Darwin.

The Power has brought this upon itself by wanting to develop a commercial base in the Northern Territory where it is the "away" team (earning about $700,000) to Richmond and Melbourne next year.

Port's frequent flyer account will be boosted next season with travel to five states or territories - Victoria, Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and the NT.

In the six double-up games, Port gets only one of the 2010 finalists - Collingwood.

The Anzac Day weekend tradition of hosting St Kilda is gone. The Power has the Gold Coast on Saturday April 23 this time.

There is no game at the MCG until Round 21 against Hawthorn.

There are three Saturday afternoon games at AAMI Stadium - against West Coast, Gold Coast and Fremantle.

There is one Friday night game at home - against Hawthorn on May 6.

Yep a very sweet draw. But we had a pretty good one this year too and it didn't help us out very much.

i dont mind the idea of the 3 saturday afternoon games now that i am not playing footy myself. but, in saying that you try to make money as a business and putting 3 teams that are not going to bring massive support is a bit of a downer!

Collingwood given dream 2011 AFL draw

THE AFL has given Collingwood the ideal launching pad for back-to-back premierships, handing them a dream 2011 draw.
The league this morning released a draw which will feature 187 matches played over 24 rounds, with the new side Gold Coast's inclusion extending the AFL's season by a week.

All sides will each play 22 games, with the AFL scheduling 19 rounds where just one team has a bye, and five rounds where three teams are given a week's rest.

The Pies this year powered to a premiership despite playing all of the previous season's top-three teams twice.

Next year, their draw is enticing, with 18 of their 22 games in Melbourne, and no travel until Round 14.

Even their two byes are perfectly placed, with Malthouse's charges given the opportunity to rest up in Rounds 7 and 13.

Their interstate encounters are far from challenging - they play Sydney, the Gold Coast, Port Adelaide and Fremantle in their four trips spaced over the last ten weeks.

But the AFL has acknowledged their rivals' desperation to play the Pies in high-drawing home encounters means they will always have a leg up on rivals.

Does this surprise anyone though?

Nth Melbourne travel to Perth in Rnd 1 and play twilight Sunday, then face Collingwood the next Saturday on a 6 day break plus travel, fantastic.

As as the inventers of Friday Night Football Id like to publicly thank the AFL for giving us another slice of the action this season. Dickheads...

Apparently Collingwood/Essendon own Anzac Day becuase they developed it, why isnt it the same for FNF?

Because like i have said the AFL draw is about maximising profit and gives absolutely no consideration to the eveness and fairness of the competition.

Geelong play COllingwood, Carlton and the GC coming off byes. Think this is the most of any side. When they play Collingwood coming off the bye, the Cats will be coming off a 6 day break just to help them aswell.

Richmond play Essendon in rounds 9 and 16. Surely that could have been spread out a bit more?

Sydney play 4 teams off a bye. The Swans face teams coming off a bye in round 12 (Richmond), 14 (Collingwood), 17 (Fremantle) and 23 (Geelong).

but Geelong and Fremantle face three, but three in a row

The Dockers cop Adelaide, North Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs from rounds three to five.

The Cats, meanwhile, front up against rested Collingwood, Carlton and Gold Coast line ups from rounds eight to 10.

if you listen to the annoucement teams coming off the bye lost more than they won when it was last used by the AFL.

46% WON COMING OFF THE BYE
54% LOST COMING OFF THE BYE
