Salary Cap 2011 - fit them all in!

Hey folks, as a bit of a side interest while sick over the past week I started to put together a list of Carlton's players and fit them in under the salary cap for year 2011. Given media speculation of what players are on, it's actually a very difficult experience.

The salary cap is "$8.21m with an ASA component of $573,000." for 2011.

If you look at Carlton, and Judd apparently being on $1mill a year, it doesn't leave much. Then you have to have players at the bottom of the ranking taking up "2011: Base Salary $66,900, Senior Match Payment $2,900".

Given that player 1 is worth $1mill and player "40" for instance is $66900, that leaves $7.20mill for 38 other players (191k each), plus rookies leaving room that a rookie might play a game and chew $2900 out of your salary cap.

It's an intersting exercise. firstly because you realise $8mill isn't much to go around when you're trying to satisfy players within your club to stay during this time of year and you also realise that the money that gets bandied around in the media is quite a way off what players must be being paid.

Also I understand that there are back ended/front ended contracts, however this is a guide only.

Has anyone else ever had a try and doing their own Salary cap with their AFL club?

Second Round - $53,800 base, $2,900 match payment

A bonus system is used to reward first year players who play a certain amount of senior games in their first year and is structured as follows:

First, Second, Third, Remaining rounds and Preseason Draft:
1-5 games $2,700
6-10 games $2,700
11+ games $2,700
Max Bonus $8,100"

Try doing Gold Coast's with Gazza getting $1.9m a year and only having anx extra $1.0M in 2011 and $0.8M in 2012. By then all the rookies/draft kids will be asking for a few more bickies. He must be going to get $3M or $4M in his first year.

Couple questions. What is the ASA part?? Would it be right to assume match payments would be 22 (players) x 22 (rounds) x 2900 (match payments per player) = $1 403 600. Therefore salary cap is $8 212 500 - $1 403 600 = $6 808 900. Or are match payments made outside of the cap?

I will have a crack at Adelaide's list for 2011.

AFL clubs have full time staff continually doing a juggling act to balance the salary cap books. Attempting to do it on your own, although admirable, will be near impossible. Good luck.

Did anyone hear Malcolm Blight on the radio last night. He confirmed that the salary amounts quoted for Gold Coast players like Ablett were very exaggerated.

Demetriou also says they are exagerrated - therefore I am leaning towards believing the rumours!
I heard some of Blight on the radio and he was about to go into more detail when he realised he should stop talking about their salaries given he is on the board. He all but confirmed Bock was on 660k and played down Ablett's but you would expect him to. How would the rest of the team feel if one bloke takes 25% of the pie while the other 40 get to divide up the rest. Ablett, I think has got a job lined up as a meter maid, which is, of course, outside the salary cap. I think he gets $30k/week, of which he is expected to put $4 in meters.

Im going to rate the crows players in order of what I think they should be getting and then add the $$ in after some more thinking. Assuming we get Jacobs in trade also. This is my opinion, no idea what they would be on but merely how I would spread the cap.

Didn't realise that, I assumed the over 30 part was what gold coast were banking on to fit all their stars under the cap once the kids start to get their 2nd and 3rd contracts. Gonna make it really tough for them to fit them all in.

To be on veterans list you must be at the one club for a period of 10 years i believe and the age doesnt come into IIRC (that was my understanding although it could be 30). So therefore Akermanis was not able to be on the Bulldogs veterans list and Hall is not on the Bulldogs.
