THE AFL has unveiled a Robin Hood-style plan to tax the wealthy clubs in a bid to help the poorer clubs in a controversial increase in attendance levies under which Collingwood, Essendon, Hawthorn and Geelong would be charged an extra $1 a fan at the turnstiles.

I can see the AFL's thinking. Evens out the fact that these clubs are given the blockbuster games every year eg ANZAC day clash...

Makes a lot of sense.

Otherwise give us 6 blockbuster home games on a Friday night

Good initiative IMO to help NM and the likes lose there debt. Collingwood get the big games Anzac day, Queens Bday so they should pay a fee for it!

What about the clubs who can't get 30 k to a game get off their arse and drum up members etc.

Why should the clubs that do it well, and have a good supporter base, have to pay for the clubs that don't.

Absolute Rubbish- The Hawks and Geelong play no 'blockbuster' games as such! the games v Geelong are great spectacles as they are evenly matched sides who dont like each other.

Simply being penalised for being successful on and off the field at the wrong time....

Collingwood I can maybe understand as they get some stand alone games (Queens birthday, Anzac Day) but even then its a short sighted solution.

Poor sides need to be given a hand with the draw, but FFS get off your butts and do something to promote your club.

Because the AFL want to maximise revenue therefore the draw demands the bigger clubs play each other twice.

The Roos play every interstate team at home this year, tell me when Collingwood, Carlton, Richmond or Essendon did this?

But, to be fair, I would expect the Crows higher expenses because they travel more than Melbourne clubs would have to be factored in, as would those of all the non-Melbourne clubs.

There's one Melbourne club who travels interstate as much as the Crows, but they've been included in the "rich".

Absolutely stupid idea which only encourages mediocrity

Collingwood have been on their knees financially and had to work themselves through it without afl intervention other clubs should have to as well

There is already an equalisation fund which the powerful teams contribute to, to help the clubs that can’t do it themselves

If the afl want to give them money then they should stop throwing tens of millions at the new franchises which hardly anyone wants

Or maybe the kangaroos should have gone to the gold coast when they had a chance, they didn’t so they shouldn’t be continually given more handouts.

Give us the draw that Collingwood get and then compare apples with apples...

Until then the teams that get screwed by the draw have every right to get a share of the profits from the "blockbuster games" that the AFL insists on setting every year.

That would cost the AFL millions because you don't have any supporters. Get real. Your mob turned down the coast and that could be to your cost.

you already get money from that - the big clubs already pay into teh competitive balance fund

if you had supporters that demanded bigger games you would get it

Dutchy, what constitutes a "Blockbuster" game in your view?

comparing apples with apples

kangaroos at home vs west coast at ethiad 18,394
collingwood at home vs west coast at ethiad 38,781

thats 2.11 times more people at the same game at the same venue in the same season
