Will Ablett Leaving Effect Geelongs Success?

Postby The Dark Knight » Mon Jun 14, 2010 3:55 pm

There has been all this talk about Gary Ablett Jnr Leaving the Geelong Football Club at the end of the year and Joining the new Gold Coast franchise.

If he does, do you think it will effect their success without him or will they be just as good if not better?. (I.e How much effect has he had on their on current and recent sucess?)

If he does go and as much as I DON'T want him to (I believe he should play his whole career at Geelong), I think they will be just as successful and perhaps better without him.

Thoughts??

Well I won't take out a contract on him when he goes ha ha.

Seriously though, if Ablett stays then the whole fabric of the club could unravel. Think about it. The strength of our group is that they have sacrificed coin in order to stay together and create something special (starting to sound like Brucey now!).

If Gazza stays he will have had some serious coin thrown at him. All of a sudden we are a club with one man the odd man out who is earning the bread around the place, it could upset the equilibrium of the club. If Gazza goes that frees up our salary cap. We would then be in the market to snaffle a good young player or we could distribute the cash to prevent GWS taking a big juicy bite out of our ar5e as well. As usual, in Wells we trust!

I have to say it I just don't feel the same about Gazza anymore. I reckon we can cover him and I reckon the man who can do that is Travis Varcoe. This kid is going to be an absolute gun. Ablett has been evasive in the extreme this year (fair call, it's a huge decision for him) but the longer he remains silent the more likely it is he's going to go. I also think he's been really whiney this season, expecting to be played where he wants to be, telling the umpires how to umpire the game. You don't need to do this Gaz.

Gaz is a gun no doubt, but the club always has been and and always is bigger than the individual whether he is an Ablett or not.

Well, he's my favourite player of all time and if he leaves, I am going to be absolutely devastated. I will really be gutted. I don't even want to think about it. Please stay.

I know we still hold hope if a player that is a great, can stay at one club but eventually it will happen when players wont worry about staying, money will take over and become like sports in America, sportsmen wont care as long they are getting paid top dollar.Personally i think he will go to Gold Coast.

The cats can cover Ablett if they need to. IF and I will not say it is a Big if he goes I feel the cats could find someone to replace him. My kids will be devastated if he goes but We got the JPod now and a few others coming through. I feel the cats will be alright

Ablett will go to the GC.
If I understand it correctly, the GC are allowed to sign players now, but not announce those signings till the end of the year. That is why Gaz is staying silent, he is forced to.

What he can bring to the GC is far more than he can bring to Geelong, it's good for the game for him to go up there.

Geelong will be fine without him, they have others who can step up, and as mentioned already, they can use the spare cash to retain their other guns.

Ablett to the GC, Travis Boak to Geelong.

Bollocks. Think of how much Boak would improve at the Cattery. The kid can play no doubt about it. Loving this poll result, plenty of people praying that the Cats put their claws away and hoping that it happens when Gazza goes.

If you want us come and get us.

you need boak to go to the gc, and gaz to go to the power... then you'll still NOT play finals...

i personally think if the cats loose gaz its not the end of the world by any stretch, the cattle that bomber thopson has to work with is amazing. blokes like david wocjinski would be a walk up start in any other side in the AFL yet really struggles to brake in to geelong.
just think if you loose gaz the on ball brigade still consists of bartell, selwood, corey, kelly, chapman and stokes
IMO thats still a bloody good on ball brigade which leads me to think the cats can most certainly cover him,
and on a different note port adelaide most certainly cant loose boak back to geelong as he is ports best player by a stret
Were has Marbles gone and who is Satchel

Geelong won't be as good without him because he's a outright superstar, obviously. BUT they'll still be the best team in the comp if he leaves. The Cats are just that good.

Buying a few "stars", at high prices, to play among their other recruits won't make the Gold Coast [or GWS] a good team.
It will create publicity and get the TV interest going among that strange form of football fan who rates "stars" and "guns" over teams.
They are perhaps the people who are most likely to pay for Pay TV to watch their idols on Foxtel over and over again??

Problem is if the GC or GWS get these stars in on big money will the rest of the players resent the fact that these guys are earning more coin than they are. Look at Warrick Capper and the bears.

1. Better than Centrals
2. Not as good as Geelong, Collingwood, St Kilda, Bulldogs, Carlton, Fremantle, Essendon, Sydney, North or Melbourne.
