Lost Dees-Eagles Brownlow votes resubmitted

By Ben Broad

UMPIRES have had to resubmit their Brownlow Medal votes from the round eight clash between West Coast and Melbourne at the MCG after the envelope containing their best players failed to arrive at the AFL.

The League confirmed on Friday that the votes had not been lodged by the Monday deadline following the May 15 match.

Votes are usually submitted as part of the umpires' match paperwork, which is then normally delivered to AFL House.

Though the paperwork did arrive at the AFL, League officials had discovered the votes given by umpires Simon Meredith, Stuart Wenn and Jacob Mollison were not with it.

The AFL said a full search was conducted of the umpires' change rooms and adjoining areas.

The League also interviewed all match-day staff who had access to the area in the post-game period.

However, after the search failed to find the envelope, the League concluded the votes had simply been misplaced.

The AFL umpiring department has since put in place additional measures to prevent a repeat of the occurrence.

West Coast beat Melbourne by 29 points, with Matt Priddis (35 possessions, 12 tackles), Dean Cox (25 possessions) and Adam Selwood (29 possessions) among the better players on the ground.

Yet if someone runs water for a couple of games and places a $20 multi bet on completely different games, there's hell to pay.
