Can life get any worse for Ablett?

Postby duncs7 » Tue Jun 27, 2006 10:27 am

This news broken this morning. After such a great career things just keep getting worse for Gary Ablett.

FORMER AFL star Gary Ablett Sr has been bashed in an alleged attempted robbery in the Victorian city of Geelong.

The attack occurred some time after 11.30pm (AEST) last night in Latrobe Terrace, Geelong's busiest street, police said.

Melbourne Barwon Health spokesman Amanda Bavin said Ablett arrived at Geelong Hospital's emergency department at 1.44am (AEST) today, but left 11 minutes later.

"Basically, he did not stick around to receive treatment," she said.

Ms Bavin said she could not disclose the nature of Ablett's injuries but said she assumed they were minor.

Vyasa Oftesea, 31, has been charged with attempted robbery, assault with intent to rob, intentionally causing injury and assault with a weapon.

He will face the Geelong Magistrates' Court today.

Police would not confirm what weapon was used in the alleged attack.

Geelong Football Club president Frank Costa said he was shocked to hear of the alleged assault.
Mr Costa was unaware that Ablett was no longer at the hospital and had been on his way there to see him.

"Anything that can go wrong has gone wrong with this bloke," he said.

Mr Costa said Ablett often visited a cafe run by friends in Latrobe Terrace.

Ablett was recently hospitalised after he cut his foot while mowing the grass.

I would like to give Gary the benefit of the doubt, but it is hard to - considering his past. Getting bashed in a street late at night, then leaving hospital without treatment sounds suss to me.

He seems to attract trouble....

Even a one eyed Catter such as myself would agree that he is certainly no angel and his part in the death of his younger female compainion was less than heroic to say the least. But why is it suss that Ablett left hospital without treatment? Would you stick around and wait for the media to arrive and add another chapter on the rapidly growing 'you' file? No effing way. Minor injuries vs. Media bullshit..what would you do?

I feel very sorry for blokes like Gary Ablett and yes, even David Granger. Blokes who are suddenly away from the cheering fans and don't have much going for them off the football field. Thankfully, today young players are encouraged to develop a life outside of football, something that the two players mentioned above would have benefited greatly from.

If you had no intention of being treated, then why go to the hospital in the first place??

Like I said, it is probably just a coincidence that the guy decided to rob Gary Ablett when it could have been anyone (and I hope this is what truly occurred) - but when you factor in Gary's past it does make you wonder, REB....

Then again, you shouldn't always judge someone based on their past indiscretions either.

Well, she may have been a lot younger than Ablett, but she was over 18 and therefore should be responsible for her own actions. Like I said though, Ablett's actions in the situation were less than heroic.

As for you MW, you continue to set new standards.
