Port Adelaide President Brett Duncanson says without the investments from the SANFL and AFL the Power would have recorded a trading deficit of $2.9 million.

From the article,

Affected by the difficult economic environment, the club recorded a decrease in revenue from corporate partnerships and memberships in 2009, while investment in football increased

My impression was that they had made quite some headway in getting new members to sign on this year after the campaign they had when the troubles were brought out in the media?

Port are still the only AFL club without a major national sponsor I believe. From a very reliable source I've heard that the PAP were very close to signing a major sponsor recently until.......................... the CEO of the company saw a DVD of M.Williams and his reaction to Alan Scott at the 2004 Grand Final. He is stated to have said that if that is the way he treats the owner of his major sponsor, there is no way that his company will sponsor them. Anyone heard anything along similar lines. Again, from a VERY reliable source clos e to the Power.

So this potential 'sponsor' has only just seen that vision for the first time, 9 years later? Obviously not a football follower and if so he would have no idea of the reasons for Williams doing what he did, which IMO was well justified.

But probably not a good business decision...
And, I suspect Alan Scott would have been proved right but for "Bucky" Cunningham's intervention and influence over the coach in 2004.

I've never seen the vision, I would regard myself as a football follower.

You have no recollection of Mark Williams' on the dais in 2004 with his neck tie askew ( in reference to the choking tag we held for some time ), or of his words -

''Alan Scott, you were wrong! "

I thought you were a football follower too.

I'm not a Power follower but Allan Scott was wrong, i bet he wished he never made that statement regarding Mark Williams coaching ability.
A major sponsor shouldn't make statements like that, egg doesn't look good on your face!

Agreed, there was maybe elements of wrong on both sides, but a Major Sponsor shouldn't have that big a say IMHO (not verbally anyway, their chequebook should be their voice).

I certainly have no recollection of the vision as I never saw it, I have a recollection of what I read online and in the papers, I saw a little of that year's GF early on but spent the rest of the day kicking the footy and catching up with mates, on top of that I hardly watch any TV, I'm not sure how that makes me no longer a football follower. I'll have to inform the kids that we're off to watch another sport next winter. :?

And a coach should never get on the victory dias and bag the major sponsor. An appalling lack of grace that won the Power few friends.

I disagree, I dont think Williams 'bagged' him at all. Scott said "Port will never win a Premiership while Williams is coach", we won one and Williams said "Alan Scott, you were wrong". I dont see that as bagging the bloke and if it was it was only returning the shot Scott sent out in the first place.

Major Sponsors IMO should never comment on who is employed by or how the club is run.

When you've just received a truck load of luck yourself, you don't go around bagging others.

I agree mate, major sponsors shouldn't comment on who is employed by the club or how it is run but if Choco is 'returning fire' then I'm sorry that is bagging a major sponsor on the podium. He got the runs on the board and there was absolutely no need for that churlish display. Two wrongs don't make a right and why bother when you have just won a premiership? If a flag can't unite your club what can?

As someone said he should've just held the cup up and smiled. It was enough.

I think it's in the Williams blood to be undignified winners. Stephen Williams was a sore winner after 1998, if you were there on the boundary line when they did their lap of honour you'd know what I'm talking about.
