So what do we reckon? Still reports it is very shallow this year, could be more mature draft picks than usual as some players may not last until the Pre-season where they usually get picked up. Going to be an interesting game of Poker especially for Ball.

Im heading over for it, was lucky enough to win tickets, will be interesting I hope

I know its in the AFL thread but i think this AFL draft has huge implications for a few SANFL teams this year who will have very nervous coaches out there.

Quite right.
You can make a valid argument that West still haven't fully recovered from the 2003/04 drafts

I hope Jack gets the top vote - what a great kid - he will do SA proud

And when he retires from AFL, we can get him for zero points, as the school is considered our "juniors"! :D

Yep the 2003 one really did kill us. The 2004 draft just compounded it.

My pick of the draft is morabito, kicks very well on both feet and hits alot of targets. Good size for a midfielder too, pity melbourne dont have picks 1 2 and 3!

FWIW, Matt Rendell reckons only 7-8 juniors from SA will be drafted this year.

He expects more next year as the talent pool in that age bracket in SA is bigger in his opinion.

I don't think his estimate included any rookie listings which we all know can impact SANFL teams as much as the main draft.

On the AFL website, it suggests the crows may look at a mature aged player from the SANFL with their last live pick in the draft on thursday (remember Martin has been taken as the crows last pick as they upgraded him).

With the crows side, who could this be? I would suggest someone like Jimmy Ezard (well i hope). He is known as the hardest worker throughout Westies and if not the competition, his form last year was as good as any and he would add some really good depth into the Adelaide midfield. After all, if the crows think the next 2 years is the year, why pick up someone that is not ready to add to the side with pick 61 when needed when you can get a ready made player.

Plenty of others to look at such as Tristian Gum and numerous Centrals players..

If they do think the next 2 years are 'the' years then why punt on mature age when they are obviously happy with the group they have?

I dint see any clubs looking at players who will only give them 2-3 years service in this draft. 4+ as a minumum. ( Inc Luke Ball )

I would guess that they probably think there will be sweet FA left by the time their last pick comes around, so they might as well spend the 'junk pick' on someone with obvious ability who might come in handy if injuries take their tole. They are probably also confident in the depth of their squad, so feel they can take a calculated punt like this without too much risk.

In the same interview with Rendell I referred to before, he said the Crows are only going for juniors - no mature age recruits in mind

Maybe he's just being cagey, but that's what he said.

Here's the AFL's Phantom Draft

Surely Port & especially the Crows wouldn't let Tapscott slip to 19 would they?

I have checked someone else's recollection of the 5AA interview and they recall he ruled out any "recycled" players in the main draft, but possibly in the rookie draft.

Probably I have confused "recycled" with "mature age" or maybe, as I said, he is simply being cagey with everyone.

Wouldn't surprise me to see him slip. If Bartlett slips to 27 though i will be very surprised, Has huge upside.

My prediction is every single club will be"delighted with the picks they got" and Adelaide will get"someone who we never dreamed of getting so late in the draft" Also NFC will call at least 3 of the Crows picks a gun

some of the write ups are hilarious with "James Hird and Luke Hodge rolled into 1" even getting a run today in the paper today.Every one is a potential 200 gamer but 10% of them wont play a premiership game....For me no interest at all as I don't know anyone personally .I will read the Hawks write up on their web site in the next week and read who the Roosters lost on The Roost tomorrow.
