St Kilda star Lenny Hayes will miss the rest of the season with a serious knee injury after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament during Sunday's match against the Kangaroos at Telstra Dome.

Hayes left the field during the third quarter after copping a knock to the knee but it appeared to be only a minor injury given he was able to return to the field and complete the match.

The former skipper was below his best however in finishing with just 11 touches in the Saints' 17 point win but there was no mention of him even being injured by the club post-match.

However when the Saints' published their injury list on Monday afternoon, Hayes was listed as being out for the season because of an 'ACL reconstruction'.

Hayes and coach Grant Thomas will speak to the media about the shock injury later this afternoon.

Yes I would say this will really hurt the saints. With Ball not being 100% fit, its going to be hard to fill this spot. I personally think Hayes was there best on ballers.

They sit well with me. Bit of humour doesnt hurt anyone.

Bummer, had him at 85/1 for the Brownlow and didn't have too bad a start to the season

Really 85/1, hes had a pretty good start to the season. This really is bad luck. The boy was probably in with a shot a this stage.

Absolutly. Im not sure they can now without Hayes. He was the guys that really gets them going in the middle. But in saying that they still have some really good players in the middle.

They do, but I still think their prime mover is Sir Robert Harvey and I don't think too many people would select him with confidence to get through the season without missing any games due to injury, thus leaving the Sainters more than likely, very exposed in the middle ... Hamill, Koshitzke and Hayes ... Thats some big outs for the boys from Moorabbin!!

You can tell St.Kilda is starting to play well when their star players

CHRIS JUDD did a hammy over in WA
ROBERT MURPHY did a knee at the MCG
DANIEL GIANSIRACUSA, di a hammy at the MCG
BRENT GUERRA did a groin at the MCG
NICK MALCESKI did a hammy at the MCG
BRETT DELEDIO did a knee at Skilled Stadium

Thats 4 serious leg injuries at the MCG in one weekend,

Don't forget Anthony Corrie doing an ACL at the Gabba, however anecdotal reports are that he was suffering leg soreness from palying at Telstra Doom on April 13......FWIW it was Friday the 13th.....

Congratulations to all concerned for alerting me
that leg injuries occur on other grounds.

I pulled a hamstring playing Amatuer league one day as well.

It seemingly happens MORE often at TD.

That's quite impossible as Crawford lives in southern suburbs of Melbourne and
couldn't possibly drive past Telstra Dome on his way to the MCG.
He injured himself stepping on his Telstra mobile phone.

Mal, I know AFL players do not like playing at Colonial Stadium as they find it hard on their legs. That is indesputable amongst the AFL world.

However why has one club that plays full time at Telstra Dome (North Melbourne) have less than the average number of injuries for clubs (5) vs the average of the other clubs (6) compared to the Western Bulldogs (10) and St Kilda (7) (Carlton, Geelong and Essendon split their games between Colonial Stadium and another venue).

When preparing AFL footballers you control the controlables and influence what you can influence. The clubs have corporate agreements that stipulate they have to play at CS so how can they control and influence and effect it has on their players.

That is done through modifying training programs, analysing rest periods and player load, prehab and effective rehab programs and effective recovery programs.

One club appears to be getting it right, two of them are floundering despite haveing equivalent resources....

Bottom line there are a plethora of interventions that clubs can implement to minimise the injury risk of playing at Docklands and if, after six and half years of playing there, Saint kilda and Footscay are too dumb to work it out, well they deserve every injury they get.
