Judging by this story, yes he does, only they are really stupid.

What does everyone think?

I think he is a muppett.

How and when does it get decided as to whom runs our game? Who votes on that position and when?

For if that is not one of the most outrageous ideas ever thought up I'm interested to hear or see one.

Lets play everyone else once, then we'll work out something for the last few weeks.......FFS.

The one good idea there was to give some more incentive to finish top.
But a final 9 or 10? Over the last couple of years, I believe there have only been about three teams who have genuinely believed they could win the flag. (three out of eight, and believe in the SANFL three out of five genuinely believe they can win).
It could lead to another type of tanking or contrivance - wanting to finish 9-10th after the 17 rounds to play the bottom teams in the last few rounds, rather finishing 8th and having to play a St Kilda or Geelong (as examples from the last couple of years).
I think the "A Dose of Reality" poster on the Adelaide forum is spot-on.

So the teams in the bottom 8 will get an unfair advantage?

They must end up playing some weak teams which will allow them to pick up enough points to overtake some teams in the top 8 because they are forced to play better teams as a 'reward' for having the better record.

I can't wait for a top 9 or top 10 finals series.

Well that is just plain DUMB.
Might as well as have Collingwood and Carlton play each other every round too.
Mind you at least there's some rhyme or reason (be it poor) to their proposed fixture unlike the SANFLs.

Because they obviously can't play everyone either once only or twice, the current system does throw up some unfairness if Team A gets the bottom 6 teams on the run home v team B getting the top 6 teams (where teams A and B are ranked say 6th and 7th after round 15).

So while I'm not convinced about the idea from a logistics POV (ie, supporters often make plans well in advance based on the draw), I can see some logic in it. Pity the team ranked 14th that loses a couple of blockbuster home games because the likes of Collingwood and Carlton are in the top 8. I notice AD still wants his cake too in that he will schedule the second Collingwood-Carlton match-up regardless of where they are on the ladder.

Overall, I think leave it as is. I don't mind them rescheduling games from say a Sunday noon to Friday night if that match-up turns out to be the match of the round. But to completely re-do the draw seems too extreme.

I don't reckon the clubs would support this. They sell memberships based on knowing who they are playing and when for the whole 22 weeks.

Forget the AFL, it's so hideously deformed it is beyond help. All it wants to do is make more money, it's doesn't care who or what it kills in its pursuit.

IIRC the Scottish Premier League do something similar to this, at a certain point in the season the split the ladder in half and the top half play only the top half for the title and the bottom half play only the bottom half for the relegation battle.

Worse idea i have ever heard of, ideally if they did this unless you could get top 2 you would tank to get 9th position and then try and win every game in to get top 4 finish while all the teams above you play each other.

He was. He had a big say in the introduction all this AFL socialism garbage, and now Demetriou is perfecting it.

Yep you are right mate the SPL do the same but it is slightly different as there is no finals series and it won't affect who wins the league and gets relegated. It would be terrible to bring that into the AFL.

Now you can appreciate why some companies pay big dollars and reward CEOs and executives for what on the outside seems like poor performance ... their KPIs are not aligned to the needs of customers and staff but solely to the shareholders.

The AFL is being run no differently ... being profitable and an insatiable appetite to grow rapidly by an overwhelming desire to maximise media rights (as it's biggest revenue earner) at the expense of the players, clubs, supporters and game itself.

It's a corporation now, the sporting body has long gone.

Right on dedja!
It is all about TV rights and revenue - they'd have a final 16 [or 17] if they didn't think it looked too ludicrous and obvious.
Demetriou, however, must have support from the board - it couldn't be all just his idea.

Bloody oath mate... After the 'Buddy bump' last week and the 50 metre penalty I saw tonight to decide a game, I can't help but agree. Getting more and more difficult to watch as the years go by.

I wouldn't try and share the blame on this one, it will just make lots of people look stupid instead of only one.

Whilst it's a different subject it's still about Demetriou so I'll post here ...

Is anyone else annoyed that he continues to make public statements about incidents in yet to heard tribunal hearings?

Maybe it's just me?

Bugger it, it should be like this:

24 rounds split into four conferences:

Conference 1:
Carlton
Collingwood
Essendon
Richmond

Conference 2:
Adelaide
Fremantle
Port Adelaide
West Coast

Conference 3:
Geelong
Hawthorn
Melbourne
North Melbourne
St.Kilda

Conference 4:
Brisbane
Gold Coast
Sydney
Western Sydney - you know this will happen regardless of logic
Western Bulldogs

Conferences 1 and 2 play round robin 8 times; 3 and 4, 6 times

Then the final 10 system.

Everybody wins!
