Where are the Cats ???

Last nights result continues a very disappoint season for the cats.......

Off Field the Geelong Footy Club over the past 5-6 years have worked extremely hard to set this footy club up to give it every opportunity to be a powerhouse in the comp both on and off the field.

On field, I think this is Bomber's 7th year as coach, he has been given ful control to build a list and the core of this list has been together for probably 4 seasons now...........

The club has shown a lot of patience but if the Cats poor results continue this season, how much more patience does the club have???

My questions are
1. Where will the cats need to finish for the club to continue it's faith in the clubs current list and coach...
2. If changes are to be made at end of the season, will it be a major shake up of the list or will it be coaching structure....

I think the Cats have made the finals 3 times in the past 7-8 seasons, given the Cats lack of success just making finals should not be deemed as good enough, finally given the club has shown enormous faith in the Coach and players, if poor results continue, how much more patience will be shown.......

as a cats fan the fact they have only made 3 finals over the last 7-8 years isnt completely disheartening given they had an old list and then a young list to develop.

the list should be at its peak this year and i would have felt a grand final appearance would be a min requirement with all things being equal with injuries. they have had injuries but they werent the reasons behind poor performances.

this is the best draw the club has had in years and they are doing all they can to absolutely f*** it up.

I agree this list has been together for a few years now and should be improving to a point were they should be a real strong contender

16 teams only one team can win a flag.
Its no disgrace for teams like GE-SK-AC
to finish where they do each year.
Dont forget SS were perennial placegetters for years
before winning the 2005 flag.

GE may lack exquisite skills but do play a hard at it
brand of footy, that footy week in week out is hard
to maintain, unlike the flowing teams like BL + PP
who have had long winning streaks in recent years because
they play attacking enterprising ENJOYABLE footy.
GE will bounce back and be very competitive again in 2006.

Mal,

their are other, of course it is a tough gig to win a flag and only one side each year can achieve this goal, but there are also other indicators apart from winning the flag that you need to take in to account to determine whether your club is on the right path to achieve this ultimate goal........

both the Cats and Saints are in the same boat, previous failure gave them the opportunity to draft extremely well, the core of their list have been together for four of five seasons now, they have gained finals experience in the past 3 seasons, these two clubs should be positioned better then any other club to win the flag..........

If both these clubs miss out on a GF berth this year, their window may be shutting in their face unless both clubs make some tough calls.......

At the end of the day, if clubs are satisfied with finishing 3-6th each year, then they will never play in a GF let alone win one......

Mal, you seem to be satisfied with making finals, this comp is about winning them

Mal,
there's only 14 teams with a chance of winning a flag, as long as Connolly & Thomas are coaching.

dont put geelong in the same category as the SAINTS the list they have had with the draft picks they are the failures of the competition. I wish geelong had there selections not necessarily there list.

You are a little sensitive, I was not having a crack, I was making a point, that their comes a time when the question needs to be asked, given our list, given our opportunities, given our players development, given our clubs history, is finishing 3rd or 4th good enough......

Last year, given the crows previous year, I was disappointed we finished 3rd given the opportunities we had come finals, but putting it in context, from where the club was in 2004, I was stoked.

This year, I expect the club to make the GF....

In the SANFL, I am a passionate dogs man, for years we were happy just to make the finals, for years, making the finals, we considered that to be a successful year, now making GF, we consider it to be a successful year

I am not having a crack at the cats or saints, all I am saying it is time for both these clubs to put up, they have been building for four years now, they have been assisted with draft picks and I am sure if they fail this year, there will be plenty of supporters asking serious questions about what changes need to be made in order to experience the ultimate goal

Mal, I am not sure there is as many patient saints or cats supporters like you, these clubs have been starved of success and crave success and feel that their club should be positioned as strongas any to achieve this success and if they don't, rightfully some tough calls need to be made

True the windows of opportunies are being eroded
at the AC-SK-GE clubs, all good clubs , but by your
definition need a flag to become a great club.[AGREE]

Just a hypothetical one for you SD.
If WC dont win this years flag do they become a
non achiever as well?

well WC supporters would have a little more patience, given they have tasted success in their brief history

If they finish top four and miss out again, I am sure the club will view it as a wasted year, considering the midfield they have in place

i am also sure the club will make some tough calls to ensure they do not become the bridesmaid again next year

if you keep doing the same thing, where will the improvement come from

SD

Like I keep saying mate ONLY one side can win the flag at a time.
There is a long queue AGAIN this year.
AC-CO-GE-ML-SK-SS-WC-WB have claims some more than others.

SS pipped an open field last year and all of a sudden ROOS + team
are history makers and have been accoladed as a gritty corageous team
with steely resolve etc.......
Had WC won the flag SS then drop into your contentious bracket of
non achievers as well after numerous cracks at it in recent times.

The losing teams in 2006 will not be SATISFIED but SOME will not be DISGRACED.
Obviously a couple will be disappointing[ most prob WC-SK-GE-AC if not premiers]

C'wood weren't disgraced when beaten twice in the GF- hopefully we get another crack this year.

Mal, we'd all like to see the 'Aints win a flag- that's why we're so critical of Thomas the Red-nosed Reindeer, as he's clearly holdig them back

You cant be serious about the 'AINTS winning a flag.

I cant win my argument with you + SD .

But if my SAINTERS win the flag I will dig up this thread
and...........

How stiff is MT79 he barracks for GLENELG and GEELONG

I think most people like an "even spread" of flags- the 'Aints have the potential, I think they deserve a decent crack at it, hence me sledging Thomas to nauseam. If it was an 'Aints- WCE/Ess/Car/BL/PP etc, I'd support them (I actually supported them in 97)
How come so many people, spread over many clubs, have the same opinion about Thomas? It's no conspiracy, where there's smoke, there's fire & we're looking at the Great Fire of London, circa 1666!

Totally gutted. Where are Geelong? Absolutely nowehere. We might make the eight but the plain fact is that our man on man contested game plan has been well and truly worked out, we are not working hard enough and Thompson has no plan B whatsover.

We cannot win the flag unless the coach is prepared to select some players who are prepared to run like Stokes and Varcoe and come up with some lateral thinking and a bit more flexibility on match days. We will continue to lose against any side who has a half decent coach and a team that is prepared to work hard because at the moment we are dropping our heads faster than Henry VIII.

Ah **** it.

Dear REB

As a millionaire Crows supporter (apparently we all are) I am looking to minimise my tax this year by sponsoring/ making a donation to a sporting institution. Givent that I love footy and don't want to sponsor another crap code (a la League & soccer) should I sponsor the CATS? Would you recommend this in terms of value for money for my investment? When would I expect any returns?

Yours finacially

Tassie

With apolologies to Andrew Lloyd webber and the Cast of CATS

To the tune of Memory

All night not a "yelp" from the players,
Have the Cats lost their mojo,
Thompson yells downs the phone,
In the "G" light the Maggies collect four more points,
As Cat fans begin to moan,

Memories of Wizard cup fights
I can smile at them cup days,
It was beautiful then,
As a Cats fan I don't know what happiness is,
Let '63 live again....
