Think it's a bit early to label Watts a dud .. It may turn out to be so, but it also may not (which is the nature of the draft for all really)

Some fair points there but think Tambling at 4 in 2004 was just as bad a pick as Meesen at 8

Think someone put a link on here a while back in regards to the trials and tribulations of Luke Molan (pick 9 in '01).

That's an amazing story for Molan. I must admit, when I read the opening post, his name was one where I went "who". I remember the name now but obviously can't recall him playing, ever.

Poor barsted. Much like Fitzy, their bodies weren't capable of allowing us to see their best on the big stage.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Scarlett was a father/son selection.

Pretty sure Brown was as well....

nah, Gibbs goes alright, i just didn't pput where he was picked... Gumbleton is the dud!

i also saw ROK was picked up at pick 55 or something... Chapman was picked up at 31, the pick after J Brown, Stiffy Johncock was pick 56 or something too off the top of my head and a few other interesting ones...

Footywire is also very good.

Gumbleton, Grant and especially Watts are too early to call. Calling Watts a dud is ridiculous at this stage of his career.

Other mentions for your drafts.

1997- Black and Power (31 and 5) were super picks.

1998- Embley at 57 was a steal.

1999- A great draft. Glass (11), Corey at 8 were great picks but there was also some amazing value Chapman at 31, Gia at 32, Davis 34, Ling 38, Gilbee 43, Enright 47, Bateman 48, O'Keefe 56, Bruce 64, Houlihan 73.

2000- Kerr rates a lot higher than Kosi for me. Are you just picking the duds with the least amount of games? Because McDougall was the dud of this draft for sure. Steal of the draft goes to Adelaide picking up Stiffy with pick 67.

2001- Bartel has been better than Dal Santo over the stretch easily IMO and of course don't forget Gary Ablett Jnr with a F/S. Steal of the draft? Brian Lake at 71 surely.

2002- Mackie in your top 2? Gee it was a weak draft. McVeigh and Salopek will both be better IMO and McIntosh a lot more important. Shirley at 56 and Fisher at 72 were the steals IMO.

2003- Stanton and Adcock also very good picks who will be very good players. Shane Tuck at 73 the steal.

2004- Griffen, VB and Lewis are all excellent picks form 04, The steal goes to Adelaide with Knights at 56.

2005- The last draft to judge for me as the other 06/7 and 08 are still firmly in the development stage in regards to footy at this level. Higgins, Hurn and Vince are all very good players and i would have all before Stokes. Stokes would be the steal off the draft though at 61. Kennedy could become one of the top 5 in this draft if he continues to develop like he has in the last 18 months.

Didn't Steve Lawrence's father Barry sit on the bench for Southport as a 45+ year old for one game (admittedly he'd played 126 games between '69 and '76 prior) so Steve could qualify under father son? Makes a fair difference from Ross Gibbs having to play 180 games during qualify.................... oh hang on, that still wasn't enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All this retrospective talk of drafts drives me nuts. The draft is not an exact science, and had clubs been allowed the benefit of hindsight they may have made different choices.

But let's face it ... who cares? And to label Jack Watts a dud is absolutely ridiculous. It seems every number 1 pick cops this at some early stage of their career but they usually turn out to be very good players.

A nice try nuggety but this thread is a dud. Not only is it premature to label Watts a dud but it's also a bit rude on Gumbleton and Grant as well.
