John Elliot and the Carlton FC

Heard this on the radio news just now, if this is factual information then I do hope charges are laid farily swiftly, still Elliot himself could now find himself under charges as well for witholding information from the police? Seems unusual that he would grass himself up if that is the case though?

Police speak to Elliott over pay-off
June 25, 2009 - 12:49PM
Police have interviewed former Carlton Football Club president John Elliott over his claims the club had paid off several women who alleged they were raped by players.

Detectives spoke to Mr Elliott at his Melbourne office on Thursday morning.

"We can confirm police have spoken to John Elliott and he has provided some information," Acting Inspector Rob Ridley told reporters.

"It would be inappropriate to comment further as the investigation is ongoing."

Mr Elliott told a charity event in Hobart last week that the club paid about $5,000 in hush money to four or five women who claimed they were raped by Carlton players in the 1980s and '90s.

Mr Elliott admitted at the event the club was concerned one of the women was telling the truth.

A woman known as "Kate" told News Limited newspapers Mr Elliott was referring to her and claimed she had been raped at a party after Carlton lost the 1999 AFL grand final.

On Wednesday, Mr Elliott said he knew nothing about the alleged incident.

Inspector Ridley asked anyone with information about the allegations to come forward.

what possessed him to make the comment in the first place ... relevance deprivation?

Because he's beneath contempt as a human being and craves attention. He is a major reason why I've never had any time for Carlton.

Apparently Kernahan has stated that this effort from Elliot may well cost him his life membership. I just don't get why he would have come forward about it now.

Not at all....

If you have a squiz on any Carlton forum, 99 % of people want him gone.

He did his job, he ****** us over, and still continues to be a knob. I hope the club rescinds his membership.....

As for the rape allegation the AFL & the Police wiped their hands off it, as well as stuffed up the investigation way back then. Why the need to air it is beyond me....

Two things:

Elliot - shut up. As I've said for ages, he is one of those people who finds it 'fun and interesting' to tell back-room stories to the media maybe just to be controversial, I dunno. But either way SHUT UP.

The actual situation itself is terrible. I haven't read the full story, so shoot me down if you need, but did she tell the cops in 99 that this had occurred, and if she didn't, why not? Did she just accept the $5k and walk?

Is it possible for Carlton to ban him from public speaking, ever? He makes almost as much of a d1ck of himself in public as Warwick Capper.

She did tell the cops, and the cops investigated. They stuffed it up by not taking DNA and several other aspects of the case were bungled and it was thrown out due to insufficient evidence. The player was widely reported as Heath Culpitt.

Is it possible for Carlton to sue for defamation, slander or libel? Would Carlton want to risk doing that to someone who would be privvy to a few skeletal closets? (all clubs would have them, not just the Blues btw)

Possible, but IMO if they took away his life membership that would just about be it for him. Money is no object to someone like Elliot, membership to the club he loves and lives for however is....

If they did take away his life membership, is there a possibility that his memory may get a little sharper when the Police talk to him next?

The Victorian public has been asking him to do this since the early '80s

Do you think it had an adverse affect on the players?

Maybe Sticks speech before the game did it?

if it's proven to be unsubstantiated, then yeh! If it's proven to be true, then I don't think the club would have a leg to stand on.

Yeeeessss, that's the thing, I would imagine a lot of clubs would be a bit nervous right now - with the skeletons rattling around. They'd be sitting back hoping that it dies a death (in the media that is - it should rightly be dealt with in the courts if necessary).
