Player/coach stoushes

Postby CK » Sun Jun 14, 2009 10:07 am

In recent times, the fallout between Jason Akermanis and former Brisbane coach Leigh Matthews has been one of the more spectacular stoushes between a player and a coach at a club. Last week, Brownlow Medallist Brad Hardie revived memories of his infamous and ongoing dispute with Mick Malthouse, calling Malthouse a "tosser" for leaving him out of his team of best players he had ever coached.

What are some of the other more memorable disputes between players and coaches that posters can remember?

Alves and Hudghton - late 1998 . A fairly "aggressive" 3/4 time address probably cost Alves his job at the Saints.
Kickett and Sheedy - eve of 1993 GF. Would have to be number one still after leaving him out of the 93 GF side.
Pagan and Schwass. Pagan gave Schwass a public bollocking after getting reported in a finals series and Schwass never play at the Roos again IIRC. (Swapped with Sydney for Shannon Grant IIRC)
Don't know how far this "dispute" went but McKernan left the Roos and joined Carlton partly to get away from Pagan. He was far from happy when a couple of seasons later Pagan turned up at Carlton as coach!!
They are the ones that come immediately to mind.

This was after practice at Glenferrie Oval in 1985 (I think), Robert DiPierdomenico had a few beers after practice and began mouthing to Allan Jeans in front of everyone about being left out of the Hawthorn team. Jeans asked Dipper to step into the trainers room.

The moment they got in there, Jeans had Dipper up against the wall in real police sergeant fashion, and began to tear strips off Dipper for his attitude .. not fit enough, drunk during the week, not giving enough on the field, etc.

It really shook Dipper up and it worked. The following year he won the Brownlow and played in the first of 3 flags in 4 years.

The vision of Barassi and Zantuck(?) at Melbourne. Would have loved to have heard it. Sure there would be plenty more involving Barassi.
Blight/Pittman, although I believe this was somewhat staged by Blight because he knew how the media would react.

Blight Vs. Gary Ablett.
Ablett didn't show up to one training session too many and Blight met him and had a walk as they were on a bridge Blight said you can cross with me or i will push you off.

Blight could have his own thread here.

- Making austin mccrabb stand away from the huddle at three quarter time at Waverley for breaking team rules
- sending the runner out to Andrew Bews in the 91 prelim and telling him he had finished Geelong's year, so he may as well come off for the last 10 mins of the game.
- sending the runner out to Darren Morgan with the message 'tell $%#^$ Morgan to get down to the rooms, have a shower and go home". A group of journos all heard that one because the old press box adjoined the coaches box at Kardinia Park
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.

Blighty also made the Crows players train on the field after the end of the match IIRC

Then there was the time he got the Crows players in a circle at 3 1/4 time (I think) and said that one player wasn't putting on the line or giving 100%. He then made Matty Connell stand in the middle of the group in shame  Something like that anyway ....

Not thinking about when he made the Woodville players do lane work at 3/4 time of one match?

Maybe I am ...

Now I think about it, it might have been a training session for the Crows post-match, on the field.

Not sure now?

Was there for that one - Football Park, can't recall the year. Classic.

I remember one night at Woodville Oval he had the players doing endless laps. Twice a lap, at opposite pockets, he would place a ball about 15 metres inside the boundary and have assistant John Reid call out a name. The player had to run in and pick up the ball (straight line, no foxing) with Blighty coming in with the big hip and shoulder from the opposite direction. I think he got that one off Barassi.

Sheeds v Ron Andrews
John Cahill v Peter Daicos
Barrassi v Healy

Watching Year of the Dogs again recently, there were a few knives out for Alan Joyce in '96.

Steve Wallis and Terrry Wallace don't come off looking too good in that...
