Do commentators just make sh#t up

First of all i am a fan of Billy Brownless. However on this mornings footy show on 9 he said Pavlich started the Port - Freo game up forward. Wrong, he started in the middle. Then he went on to say how good a shutdown job Kane Cornes did on Pavlich. Wrong again, Chappy started on the wing and as soon as the ball was bounced he ran straight to Pav and stayed on him all night. From memory Kane played on Hassleby. This is not the first time this has happened. Throughout games youll often hear a commentator say how good someone has been playing in defence when they havent played in defence all year. Anyone else notice this?

Do they make things up? Perhaps, but they have an unfortunate capacity to believe their own crap.

Bill Brownless is a simpleton who, despite 198 games at top level and mixing with other footy people, really doesn't understand the slightest thing about what is happening on the field. It's amazing to see someone survive for years in the media armed only with an impish grin and the IQ of an 8 year old.

I remember watching the Sunday footy show a few years ago when they showed it here and they were taking the piss out of Billy cause his wife had done all the notes from the game he spoke about, he is good as hes funny but you can't take him seriously.

Exactly. They do this every week with the interstate games. May be more noticeable now from a South Australian point of view as Mark Bickley is no longer on the panel. But if it is a "national" competition, why would it be so hard for the show to be "national" and do a live feed for ten minutes to someone from that city who has actually been at the game?

This sort of fake stuff is the main reason why I became disenchanted with it (as well as Tony Jones). It has become worse than the Thursday night show.

Watched it for the first time this year on Sunday and Agreed don't find it informative as the old show with Tony Jones. Channel 9 has no idea on what a footy fan wants. Yet Channels 7 and 10 still have no idea what we want

Yesterday in the Pies V Demons game, I heard one of the commentators say "...the Melbourne defender has his hands full with Dick..." No wonder the Dees cant win if that's what they're doing all game.

I don't think they make things up... but the fact they are all old farts still living in the 60's and 70's, player managers with hidden agendas like Olarenshaw and Pickering, budding comedians or just downright idiots leads us to have possibly the worst lot of commentators of any sport going around.... some of their dribble is just unbearable....

Billy Brownless and his "expert" comments were mentioned in the Sunday Mail on page 61 today. Hopefully he actually watches the game next time rather than just reading stats and watching highlights.
