The Pav on the market?

Postby Gingernuts » Thu Apr 23, 2009 4:37 pm

Hey folks,

Just had a look at an interesting article written by Gary Lyon in the Age yesterday:

http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2009/04/21/1240079672290.html

Basically it suggests that if the Pav is serious about winning a flag before he retires he has to leave Fremantle.

The man is now 28, would people be happy for the Crows to put in a serious bid for him or has that ship sailed?

Why is this in the Crows Nest?

Maybe he will go to another AFL team?

I wouldn't want him at the Crows..
He is 29 next year and only has 2-3 years of good footy in him...

He snubbed the club a few years ago and we are now developing Walker / Tippett and Porpy up forward, why would we want Pav up there - crowding up the forward line... I'm much happier with where the club is heading with the youngs kids and given the Carey experiment, it should be forgotten...
Port Power has 16 years history at Football Park...

The Port Magpies have 40 years history and the two shall never be confused or combined

You think that is all he has left in him? I am not so sure.

Would be mad not to make a play at him if was coming back to SA.

My question was whether Crows supporters would be happy for the club to put in a bid for him, that's why I put it in the Crows Nest. Happy for the mods to move it to the general AFL forum if they think there would be wider interest in this topic.

Personally I'm divided on this one. I think I would be happy for Adelaide to put in a bid, but I'd be more comfortable with trading draft picks for him, if Freo wanted too many of our promising youngsters then 'no deal'.

How many years of good footy do you think he has left..
lets face it 4 years time he will be 32 and really won't be dominating games like he does now... (or like I hope Walker / Tippett are by then).

I think he's a great player and an outstanding bloke both on and off the field, but I don't think the Crows should give up draft picks or players or for that matter - the development of Tippett and Walker for a 29 year old bloke who didn't want to come here 2 years ago

If the Crows made a move on Pavlich, then Tippett's move to the GC would be signed, sealed and delivered.

Im with SCD, I wouldn't take him ... You'd almost certainly need to include a 1st round draft pick in a package for him and I wouldn't give that up for anyone bar the liks of Cooney or Griffen.

With GC17 getting such huge draft concessions, and West Sydney to receive the same not long after, I think draft picks are all the more valuable now than ever before.

If you could pick him up for say a Van Berlo + Griffen I'd probably do it, but Freo (rightly) wouldn't accept an offer like that for Pav.

If he want's to come back it would have to be at the end of this year or never and of course the Power would be interested as well.
IMHO, the time for him to come back would have been after the '07 season when they took a big step back after playing in '06 prelim.

I think the horse has bolted on the Pav to Adelaide move

Even if he wanted to come home, I think the club would see him as too old given the direction they are now moving with it's list. To give up high draft picks for a 30 YO would be a backwards step.

Besides, if it's about a premiership, then Adelaide's window might be too long away for him anyway. Port MAY be a better option however the most likely candidates for a flag in the next 3 years (if they add Pav to their team) are probably in Melbourne. Pav at either the Bulldogs or St Kilda could create a premiership contender straight away.

I feel for Pav because he's gone down the club loyalty path (+ big contracts I'm sure) and stayed in Freo. In 2006 they looked like they might make a GF but now they seem light years away. However, now it seems everyone's making an issue about where he should play when I don't think he has publicly said anything about leaving.

On 5AA he did say that at age 29 he now sees and end to his career and the possible end of his dream of a premiership. He wouldn't be the first champion of the game to miss I would hate to see his reputation tarnished by a late desperate move to find a flag which could just as easily elude him at his new club.
In between signatures .....

Trade week should be shortened to trade day as no club will want to deal with anybody especially with the picks that the GC are getting might as well hand them a Premiership Cup while they are at AFL house to finalise their entry into the league with all the early draft picks at their disposal.

Pavlich has stayed far too long at that Purple Basket case he should have got out before he signed his current contract he has made his bed and now must lie in it

Carlton have got many early draft picks over the years and they haven't got a Premiership yet..... what makes you think GC will get one with theirs? ;)

I've never actually seen the need for Trade week ... Just set a date that's prior to Draft day, and clubs can contact each other and discuss players or picks they're interested in at their own leisure, then just lodge the paperwork prior to the cutoff time.

Don't really see the need for them all to congregate in the one place for a week.

Too late to be worth it unless he came very cheaply I think.
It could be another Wayne Carey, too late in career and carrying chronic injury, fiasco...

I dont think he would want to join Adelaide after they took kenny mcgregor over him, theres probably sour grapes on pavs behalf. We did get some reasonable service from ken but i feel if we had pav instead the crows may have just jagged another premiership in the last 4 or 5 years but thats the past, why look at that when we do have an exciting future

He is not performing at his past level this season so far.
Do we know that is only temporary?
I agree he would be worth taking if not too costly.

I'm missing something here. If he leaves to play in a side with a chance to win a flag he isn't going to Adelaide. Any Crow supporter who thinks they're within 5 or 6 years of a flag are kidding themselves. Your little ship sailed about two or three years ago with a back to back choking in the Prelims.

If he wants a flag in the next say 5 years he's going to one of Geelong, Hawthorn, Carlton? (maybe), Saint Kilda or Brisbane

Many "Experts" have us pegged as one of the better-placed sides to prosper in the coming GC17-affected years. I'd suggest we're only a couple of seasons away from serious contention again, and imo if Pav is looking to come home the Crows look the better option going forward than the other mob.

Having said that, he's getting old now and you would think the club will do the right thing and offer very little for him, if anything at all. He had his chance a few years ago and threw it away.
