Good idea to start this thread HH (after I took another one off track lol oops, soz).

You would think there will be some largish names make the move, and a great opportunity for many younger fringe players to get themselves a regular berth for top level footy.

Can anyone recall what their concessions are ... is it 1 uncontracted player from each AFL club they are allowed to take?

Hmm, Triple M have the inside word do they?

No doubt there will be big $ available for quality experienced players.
Which means that most, if not all existing clubs will lose players to the lure of more money and the GC lifestyle.

Found this:

GOLD COAST will get nine of the top 15 selections in the 2010 NAB AFL Draft, the AFL announced on Thursday.

The 17th AFL team will have picks one, two, three, five, seven, nine, 11, 13 and 15 in the 2010 NAB AFL Draft.

The south-east Queensland club will also have the first selection in each round of the 2010 draft.

Gold Coast will also enter the competition with a list of 48 senior players, nine rookies and with an extra $1 million total player payments extra allowance in 2010.

By 2015 its list will be back to 38 players and nine rookies, in line with other AFL clubs.

The club has already signed five youngsters and in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft it will have the capacity to sign a dozen 17-year-olds born in January-April 1992.

At the end of 2010, Gold Coast will also be able to pre-list 10 players who had previously nominated for the AFL Draft, or were previously listed with an AFL club, and will be permitted to sign up to 16 uncontracted players.

Any club that loses a player to the expansion side will be eligible for a compensation pick after the entry of both GC17 and the second club to be based in Sydney. Compensation picks will be tradeable and can be used by clubs at any time within five years.

First round compensation picks cannot be used until the end of the first round in the 2010 and 2011 drafts. Clubs will be required to nominate the year in which they plan to use the compensation pick before the first round of the premiership season in that particular year.

AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou said the working group on list development for the Gold Coast team had two broad objectives, "That GC17 should be able to assemble a competitive list on its entry to the competition in 2011, coupled with minimising the downside and making available trade and draft opportunities to the existing 16 AFL clubs."

Demetriou said the AFL Commission wanted to achieve a balance between GC17 having enough mature players on entry to the competition to be competitive but not trading away its access to future talent.

"There was a comprehensive examination of the entry lists and early performances of each of the recent new clubs to the competition – West Coast, Brisbane Bears, Adelaide, Fremantle and Port Adelaide," he said.

"There is a clear trend in AFL football that first-year players are now playing fewer AFL games and that the physical gap between players entering the system and those players already at AFL clubs has never been greater.

"It is the consensus view of AFL clubs across the competition that it takes three to four years of development for most players to adapt to AFL level and that the successful composition of a strong club list can take five to eight years.

"The rules for GC17 had to reflect both the capacity for the club to have access to older players in its initial entry and access to talent to develop a long-term competitive group," he said.

Gold Coast will also have selections one to five in the 2009 AFL Rookie draft.

CP and I were just talking about Jonathon Griffin and the GC17 talk come up. this is what i said before:
oh it is going to give footy a huge shake up. for the GC17 to come out and say they are going to go after G.Ablett Jr is a very good move for them. they will have money to burn and in the eyes of Stephen Quartermain who thinks they will be able to offer him in excess of 1.25m (which no melbourne club can get close to) and the chance that he and his brother could play together again. I cant wait to see what comes of it.
thoughts????

I would be very surprised to see Ablett leave Geelong. He has stated that they should have a contract extension finalised at some stage this year.

Scott Claytons major goal is to make sure every player in the AFL is out of contract at the end of 2010. Will be very interesting. They will have a list of 200-300 players and just start at the top and work their way down and hopefully land a couple of elite players. Clayton has a recruiters dream, he is building this list from nothing and has the pick of the draft in 2010.

Nick Riewoldt
Kurt Tippet
Michael Osborne
Brent Renouf
Tom Williams
Ricky Pettard
Dayne Beams
David Armitage
Shaun Hampson
Andrew Raines
Daniel Merrett

All these players have been mentioned as potential targets given they are all locals.

For the record they already have 10 players that have signed deals and are contracted to the football club.

Not even a new consortium like GC17 would risk picking up Nathan Ablett. I agree they will target one or two of the biggest names in football as they will have some serious coin to throw around for a year or two, plus the lure of the Gold Coast life style.

Nathan Ablett will forever be consigned to the Couldabeenchampion roster IMO.

even more reason why Richmond are in deep deep trouble. At least Freo rebuilt this season (moving 14 players). If Richmond finish bottom this season, they'll be stuffed for a long long time!

Why would they want a player who (by the time GC come into the comp) will have been out of the game for 3 years, was never that interested in playing and more importantly was never very good?

It suits Nathan better to be at a club where he can hide in the background. Ablett will more than Likely be a full forward and he is playing up there in Queensland somewhere

Whether he is playing for some local club or not doesn't fix the fact that he was never that good a player. Why the hell would the Gold Coast waste their time with a guy who was given every opportunity (many that he only got because of his last name) but chucked it all away to become a builder in another state?

I am not having a go at Nathan Ablett by the way. He had immense pressure on him because of who he is but at the end of the day football wasn't what he wanted to do. Good on him for being true to himself and walking away rather than sticking around and being someone he didn't want to be. At the end of the day i think the last think he would want to do would play for the Gold Coast anyway.

Agree Rod

I think it's the surname that distracts people from what's actually there

If it was Nathan Nobody we would have all forgotten about that Geelong player that skipped up to QLD! Guy McKenna would need to see a very strong commitment and I don't think Nathan could deliver.
