depending how we're doing

Winning by a fair bit - man on man still (why change something thats not broken)

Winning by a small margin in the last qtr - push some back

Losing by a small margin in the last qtr - push some back, wingers at half back, half forwards on the wing, pockets at half forward and ff one out in goal square with pockets following ball in for the crumbs.

normally behind so that guys can be encouraged to run when we've got the ball.

Only Brisbane at their best and Essendon at their best could afford numbers ahead of the ball pretty much at all times, KNOWING that they'd win the ball in most circumstances.

Depends on the abilities of the players at your disposal ... My overriding theory in footy is that the team that wins the majority of contested ball, generally has the best opportunities to win.

Therefore if you can develop your group to exel in that area, and to create more contests when the opposition has the ball, you're playing the percentages to give yourself the best shot at winning IMHO.

Examples in recent times have been the Hawks last year, Brisbane a few years back, and the CDFC for bloody ages now (Port Magpies similarly before them)

I wouldn't coach a footy team, I value my sanity :)

Man on Man for first 3 quarters then depends how your team is going an what the other teams strengths are if they have a good FB but not superstar BPockets and your down by a little bit with 5 mins to go, Wingman back into the hole in backlines, Flankers out wide on the wings, FF push up make him self a 40m leading player so ending up around the 50 with your Full Pockets 20m out from goals, then if the Full Back goes back to stand them make your Full Foward have a shorter lead an beat the new oppent in the air.
But if you are up by a goal or 2 just put one player back, play a Luke Hodge role and make the rest of the players stand there man

Depends on quality of the players you have, im a fan of higher scoring games and believe that the pressure of alot of goals being kicked will crack alot of the better teams that you would face, so men in front with an attacking style of game. Rainy days men behind the ball and kick to the backliners best friend every chance u get.
