richmonds kane johnson, has step aside as captain of richmond for a younger player.............i'd think it was because of an 'incident or two' earlier in the year

yes this one is interesting, why would a captain who is 30 give it away after just getting it? Esp when there is no clear replacement

Chris Newman should be the next captain, solid defender with a good head on his shoulders. Is a vice-captain at the moment I think, and I know the other Richmond supporters hold him in high regard, as I do. Doesn't get a lot of attention from the media or anything but does his job week in and week out and seems to have the respect of the coaching and playing group. Would be a very good captain for 4-5 years.

And before anyone mentions Richo, Plow has already ruled that he's not in contention. I wouldn't think Bowden or Brown would be either. Foley and Deledio would probably be the only other serious options I would think, but Newman is the obvious and right choice in my opinion.

Johnson hasn't been exactly the most inspirational captain, but Richmond didn't have many options at the time of his appointment. His four years at the helm has allowed a few other blokes (Newman, Foley, Deledio) to get the sufficient number of games under their belt to take on the job.

I read a feature article on Newman in an AFL publication earlier in the year and he came across as a highly intelligent man of excellent character. Deledio would need to settle on a hairstyle for 12 months before being considered.

Yes, I am sure hairstyle will come into any future discussion when the captaincy issue is raised.

Its Richmond, who would want to lead a club to 9th year after year after year after...

he certainly hasn't been the worst. I understand the captaincy now is more than just onfield but i think he did a good job onfield and a reasonable one off the field. He has done reasonably well whilst the club groomed another leader such as Newman or Deledio.

Chris Newman officially appointed new Richmond captain yesterday, with Foley, Deledio and Kelvin Moore the other guys in the new-look leadership group.

Good move by the club.
